RE: Hilo Home Depot Closing? - gtill - 07-31-2008 Before the real big boxes came in, a large building supply company called "Home Improvment Warehouse" was here, the first real competition with City Mill. They were on Nimitz on Oahu where the K-Mart is now. They boomed, it was the most sucessful store in their chain, people here loved them. It was also a true warehouse operation, and very cheap (compared to the Mom & Pops) like City Mill. However the slick big boxes were killing them on the mainland and they went belly up, closing their ownly profitable store, Honolulu with it. Immediatly a new Big Box called Eagle opened up and seemed to boom, but went belly up and taken over by Lowes till today. Someone in the sam line would fill that store. RE: Hilo Home Depot Closing? - David M - 07-31-2008 Well, except for HD and HPM, we don't have a tot of choice on this side unless looking only for specialty stuff (only electrical, only plumbing for example). I'd have to claim about equal success and frustration with either, and with the specialty places as well. Maybe just the nature of building? oh well. Glad they are here. David Ninole Resident |
