Thank you to our own Dean for gifting me a Miracle Berry plant!!! As you instructed, Dean - I transplanted as soon as I got home from work into a 3 gallon pot and watered nicely...can't wait to see the berries someday! Mahalo plenty once again. Hope to see you at Kapohocat's Punaweb Party in June

What does one use the miracle berries for? Could for example they be used to sweeten jams?

Carrie-I'm glad you've given them a new home. I'll let you know when I have some berries to share. The seeds can be planted but they should be done so right away. Only about 1 in 4 will germinate and the slugs love the seedlings.
Mella-Here is a link for the Miracle Berry or Miracle Fruit.It cannot be used as a sweetener because it has to be eaten first to "coat" your taste buds and then it will "sweeten" things consumed right after. The former owner of the nursery I now own used to say that it would make Budweiser taste like Heineken-not true though. It's a good conversation piece though. On hot days I would eat a berry then squeeze some lemon or lime with some water and without adding any sugar, have lemonade or limeade. It works especially well with citrus fruits. Limes often taste very sweet and many say that it tastes like it also has some li hing powder on it. People think that we have the sweetest tangerines in the world, and after eating a Miracle Berry they really do taste that way. Some people even say it's too sweet!

Jimbo found that coffee has a whole new glorious taste after a nibble of miracle berry...
The effect lasts for awhile on your tongue, usually around an hour for me, so I can nibble a berry then eat a meal and still have the no sour tastes!
ED: The Wikipedia site has better info than I put here... so I took it out...

I guess the effect is sort of like eating artichoke, only more intense? There's a sweetening agent or enzyme that doesn't actually sweeten the food, but sweetens your perception of the taste. This makes eating artichokes (and miracle berries) at a wine tasting not a good idea, unless you're trying to sell someone on the sweetness of the vintage.

Cahle, the little berry is WAY more intense, and the miracle berry has no real noticable taste, unlike the artichoke, & the effect lasts a lot longer, beyond through a meal....
Our little guys are still growing.... one leaf at a time... hopefully in the next year or two we can share the miracle....

you can buy them on eBay, but wouldnt guarantee the authenticity of them, I found http://www.miracleberrypill.org they claim to be official retailer. Does anyone know where you can buy the plant or the seeds, would love to grow my own miracle berry fruit tree. Or does anyone know a wholesaler of miracle berry pills, then I can buy them and sell them on ebay !

Plants are available at fruitlovers in Pahoa (fruitlovers.com) & Plant it Hawaii (plantithawaii.com - only in wholesale lots or during their open to the public sales)
Berries, I do know one person that has a plant that has berries in season. We got berries from him, & one seedling (from a handfull of berries)is growing in our yard, it is ~2.5 years old & 4" tall! these are VERY slow growers.... & very easy to lose in a landscape for a few years...
Pills? I seem to remember reading that they are not tableted in the US, but popular in Asia....
