RE: Grapes - Carolann R - 06-02-2008 I don't know a heck of a lot about grapes, but grew up in western New York State...I thought (maybe that's a mistake LOL) that you needed a good frost for grapes...anyone? Carrie http://www.carrierojo.etsy.com http://www.vintageandvelvet.blogspot.com "Freedom has a scent like the top of a newborn baby's head..." U2 RE: Grapes - waynesb - 06-03-2008 I'm sure you would not consider the frost they get in the San Joaquin Valley, "The Raisin Capital of the World!" as getting a "good frost", but I think grapes do need a certain amount of chill. I read that NELHA has found a way to fool grape vines into 2 or 3 crops a year by chilling the roots with seawater in a systematic way. They also water them the same way by condensation. Sounds ingenious, no? Anyway, my most recent experience is near SF Bay, and grapes don't do real well, but it's mostly (I believe) because they need more sun and heat to ripen well. RE: Grapes - JayJay - 06-04-2008 Of course it's the 'chill factor' but I have seen both Thompson and Concords which didn't require it and produced fine grapes and that's what I'm looking for. Any grape which would produce well each year in Puna would be a real find. JayJay RE: Grapes - mella l - 06-04-2008 A symphony grape was developed by UC Davis Viticulture Dept for the Volcano Winery. That vineyard is apx 400 ft, but I'm not sure if it get a frost or not, but makes some good wine. mella l RE: Grapes - Carey - 06-04-2008 found this link, a travellog that had some interesting info, esp. Day 4, on tropical vine growing, inc. info on different tropical species, how to strip back the vines & the fact tropical vines can have 2 crops per year: http://www.grapegrowersolutions.com/grapeguru/honduras.htm also have seen a few scientific papers on reduceing 'budburst' in tropical grape vines... just don't yet know what it is... Mella, where is the vineyard for Volcano Winery???? RE: Grapes - mella l - 06-04-2008 Carey http://www.volcanowinery.com/driving.htm It is beyond the town of Volcano just a bit and beyond entrance to the National Park by about a mile then take a left and you can't miss it. mella l RE: Grapes - Carey - 06-21-2008 One month grape report.... lots of growth (maybe 6" or more) on both the Thompson seedless & Flame.... Will realy need to plan out the arbor sooner than later... I had planted this awesome gift with an overhead arbor in mind.... Any suggestions on this will be GREATLY appreciated, as I am a grape newbie... I would like something that will last, not need replacement, look nice, & if my daydreams come true, be an entry to a small pool area in the wayyyy of future... (if anyone has this, please send info, if this is not a good plan PLEASE tell!) RE: Grapes - JayJay - 06-21-2008 Mahalo Miss 'C' for the information on grapes. Trust me, as a former commodity trader, it's time to pump in the the food crops cuz it's going to be a bumpy ride. Catz, ... here's my e-mail address. can you contact me and we'll set up a system where by you can drive out and pick up the ulus which need a home. We're having relatively cool weather now so you prolly could get them in the ground now. May I suggest you get the holes ready (let's say for up to two plants) before you pick them up here and have lots of organic fill ready to combine with what you've taken out of the ground. The holes should be a minimum of eighteen inches deep and once in the ground and filled, make sure to 'mist' the plants daily for a couple of weeks on the days it doesn't rain. My address is ... ninereddolphins@msn.com JayJay RE: Grapes - Hotzcatz - 06-21-2008 Thanks JayJay! I've sent off an email, it should be there already. How far do you see the commodities falling? I never have gotten a good handle on commodities trading but have taken most of the $$$ out of the stock market. Folks are looking to see something financially dire around September so maybe planting grapes is the best thing we can do. RE: Grapes - JayJay - 06-22-2008 Catz ... for some reason I'm not getting your e-mail can you try again? JayJay |
