RE: container homes - tada - 11-02-2008 Thanks for nice note "katz. I have a 40footer in Waimea that I rested on discarded pallets and tires off the side of the road plus my Dakota truck stored in there so I hope it's not warping! I have modest needs so my idea to fight the claustrophobia isn't to "doublewide" but to have a 20' x 20' covered concrete pad carport/patio area between 2 20 footers for that Hawaiian style outdoor living. I know I can't envision being in 20' x8' box all day so maybe can have a couch pushed up against one container- any cat or dog would love that. As well as one of those wood burning sheepherder stove or concrete block stove but keep it away from the gas tank! http://www.fs.fed.us/eng/php/library_card.php?p_num=0651+1305P Other people want to make friends- I just want to make money. James Cramer RE: container homes - heyyou - 11-03-2008 I too would like the pair of 20's with the covered lanai between them, but I'm not on island. For cutting costs, those tow trucks that just winch your car onto a tilted flatbed, can deliver a 20 footer. I would choose a nearby towing company and be flexible about deliver so he could tow a car one way, then return with one of your twenty foot containers. Roof trusses to span 8+20+8 will not be cheap. You would need a horizontal beam across each open end of the lanai if you turned the truss direction to only span 20'. I wonder which is cheaper, fewer long trusses or more short trusses plus two beams. RE: container homes - renea - 11-04-2008 heyyou, that is exactily what I am now planning on doing. Have you found any good pics online? I am trying to explain the idea to my husband and some pics would be helpful! RE: container homes - tada - 11-05-2008 yeah the problem is the roof- I was thinking of a trex deck- hopefully 20' of unsupported trex not going sag??? maybe can support it in the middle. I had a pic from Popular Mechanics that I sent to cat last year. gotta figure out how link it. Other people want to make friends- I just want to make money. James Cramer RE: container homes - hikatz - 11-06-2008 Found 3 websites, including an interesting article by Colin Reedy, but I still think the local link on affordable portable homes in Hawaii has the answers. (http://www.escapeartist.com/efam14/Nomadic_Housing.html) (http://www.buildinggreentv.com/keywords/shipping-containers/3495) (http://www.isbu-info.org/permalink/article_2008_april_isbu_arch-draw.htm) RE: container homes - EightFingers - 11-06-2008 tada, Trex will definitely sag. RE: container homes - hikatz - 11-08-2008 Somehow missed this article in 11/2/08 issue of the Advertiser on the building of a container home in Hawaiian Beaches! (http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/20081102/BUSINESS04/811020336/-1/BACKISSUES) RE: container homes - Mark - 11-14-2008 Check out this site...the guy is doing some really cool stuff. I went over to New jersey (I'm in NYC) to check things out and it is really interesting. I was concerned about feeling like I would be living in a metal box...you know, condensation, etc. They say it's not a problem. In the end, we decided to design our own house and build. http://www.architectureandhygiene.com/ Mark RE: container homes - EightFingers - 11-14-2008 tada, I get "Page not found" RE: container homes - tada - 11-14-2008 thanks maybe apl care will help better after the scathing reply i sent them.
