RE: In The News - Billie Rc - 07-18-2006 Our property taxes in Texas change yearly. They have the right to raise them 30% every three years. Nearly half of county law enforcement officials consider methamphetamine their primary drug problem, more than cocaine, marijuana and heroin combined, the survey of the National Association of Counties found. This gives many Hawaii people a "why bother" attitude. (I vote.) RE: In The News - Kapohocat - 07-18-2006 Back up there at Mella's article - about 7 years ago in Wahiawa (on Oahu) - i received a no-insurance ticket - i went to court w/ my new ins card. They fined me $1000 - 1/2 to be forgiven if no tickets in 3 years!! this was my first ticket in 18 years of any kind! I was astounded - and SAID so. The person before me had a DUI, no reg, no safety and received a $250 fine. I said to the judge so you are telling me that as long as I have insurance, if I got a DUI, no safety, no reg would be $250 but I was SOBER, registered, safetied, and so you essentially fined me $500! He said Mrs. D would you like to fine to be back at $1000 ???? Go figure!!!!!!!! RE: In The News - mella l - 07-18-2006 Go figure how do they figure that??? Wow! Was this off his hip or did you see the codes enforcement book? Unbelievable. Most people who commit multiple DUI infractions do not bother with insurance or license, I believe the figure is 90% at least it was at one time, unfortunately you don't need a license or insurance to drive a potentially deadly weapon. Has the law changed any in 7 years that you are aware of? mella l RE: In The News - JerryCarr - 07-18-2006 Recently, right here on the Big Island, a man was sent home with no bail posted TWICE for DUI in the same 24 hour period. In another case a man was sent home with no bail after fatally hitting a pedestrian while DUI. This was done by the police, but I have noticed a remarkably lenient attitude from judges on DUI cases as well. Will someone who has lived here longer than me please explain why this it tolerated? Are judges elected or appointed in Hawaii? Aloha, Jerry RE: In The News - mella l - 07-19-2006 Here is an article in a remote CA county Amador they take DUI pretty seriously. A woman accused of being involved in a hit-and-run crash that killed a motorcycle rider and then triggering fires that destroyed two homes appeared in court in El Dorado County on Tuesday, as prosecutors filed more than 20 charges against her. Tamara Wilson entered the courtroom in a wheelchair and hid her face throughout the afternoon hearing. The El Dorado County District attorney unveiled 22 charges against Wilson, including gross vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence, hit and run, and 17 different counts of recklessly causing fire. The charges stem from an incident on Highway 49 Sunday, where Wilson is accused of hitting a motorcycle and killing 58-year-old Gregory Shannon, and then fleeing in a pickup truck that was missing a front tire -- the rim sending a shower of sparks that touched off grass fires alongside the highway. The fires ultimately burned down two homes. Also Tuesday, a judge increased Wilson's bail from $1 million to $10 million. Wilson entered pleas of not guilty to all the charges. If convicted, she faces a maximum of 27 years in state prison. mella l RE: In The News - Carolann R - 07-19-2006 Eeek. She's chosen a very difficult path in her life. LOL, yeah the path she choose got her into a wheel chair too, such a waste of potential. Loved the article on the salt and so interesting I'd like to try that one day! Aloha, Mella mella l RE: In The News - leilaniguy - 07-20-2006 There's an update in todays paper about the road rage incident. The guy went to a cabin in Eden Roc seeking refuge. When he got there some men exacted frontier justice, beating the living daylights out of him before they called the police. |
