RE: Turbotax or a professional - missydog1 - 03-13-2009 Turbo tax is great if your taxes are relatively simple. Say if you are a homeowner and itemize, and you have medical deductions. If you have a business or businesses and lots of investments, a CPA may find more deductions, but I am quite confident I took all my deductions with Turbotax. An accountant can't find deductions that don't exist, so if your affairs are pretty simple it's a waste of money. The Premier package, which includes rental property, has a feature called Its Deductible which takes you through pages and pages of obscure possible deductions, and although I've done it, I've never had one of those be relevant to me, other than the basic charitable deductions. Yes, Turbo Tax is set up to do more than one state. With the package I bought, you get one state download for free, pay for additional. When you are done with one state, it asks if you want to do another one. If you're not sure about TurboTax, you can do TurboTax online. With that, you don't pay anything until you file, so if it didn't do the job, just don't file, and the experience was free. I like having the program on my hard drive, but my son likes the online fine. It saves your file for you with a password so that each time you log in you can continue where you left off. RE: Turbotax or a professional - Bob Orts - 03-13-2009 quote:Computer security experts are still advising people to stop using the on-line version until such time that Intuit can provide independent verification that the flaw that allowed people to access other peoples tax information was properly fixed. Just saying its an isolated incidents and that all is better, is not good enough when social security numbers, addresses, etc are involved. RE: Turbotax or a professional - missydog1 - 03-13-2009 That's why I don't use the online! However, Turbotax allows a person to skip around in the program, so you don't have to enter your name or your social in order to prepare the return if all you are doing is evaluating whether the software is right for you. RE: Turbotax or a professional - Dennis - 03-13-2009 Have used TurboTax for a number of years. Never a problem. If you don't own a business or are self employed, it is great. Otherwise seek the expert advice of a good accountant. RE: Turbotax or a professional - rizi - 03-13-2009 Thanks everyone, it's just a matter of finding the right accountant at the risht price. I paid $130 (a very good rate), I am guessing hawaii will probably be higher... RE: Turbotax or a professional - John S. Rabi - 03-13-2009 I just paid $600 to my PCA and I truly believe it was well spent money. Aloha, John S. RE: Turbotax or a professional - Guest - 03-14-2009 The whole idea of have to buy software or pay a pro to decipher our taxes is a sad commentary on the onerous role the government plays in ours lives. how about a flat consumption tax? It would tax everyone equally even drug dealers and prostitutes would pay their share. The 3 things that should never be taxed are Food, clothing and medical stuff. |
