RE: "alternative" housing - David M - 07-19-2006

Had dinner this weekend with some friends that decided to permit a yurt. What a horror story!!!! After far too much time and way too many dollars, it still isn't finalled by county. They say -"Never again"

Would you even be able to pull a building permit here for a canvas covered yurt?

Tony - you have recluse possibilities LOL! It's a cute little Nike Sneaker! A guy could buy it for when he needs to go into his "cave." AND he could take his cave wherever he wanted to LOL!!

P.S. You could even take it to another island when the Superferry comes and wander around without paying a resort!

Yes, a building permit is available for a yurt. There is another yurt in Seaview that is permitted. Although unlike David's friends, the permit process was almost a breeze.

You may also try the guys at www.isleofyou-hawaii.com - they have had their yurts since 2000 and seem to be really happy with them!

The yurts in Kalapana Sea View are permitted and finalled by the County. So they are fully legal -- but lenders seem to have an issue with them anyway.

To one of the Johns (ha ha - thats not what I mean...!)

i get asked this often - do you know lenders who specialize in "alternative housing" loans - either like the yurts, bale houses, or the "unpermitted going to permitted" structures?

Tony I think the sneaker is real cute. Only missing one thing I couldn't be without comfortably, where's the loo?

For "unpermitted/unfinalled homes that are going to be made legal" the best choice is Wells Fargo in Hilo. They have a renovation loan that can do it. That might be an option for the yurts too -- to give them "real walls" that lenders would approve.

Tony,
What a cool trailer, small but the cool factor is "huge" !! Is there a need for travel trailers on the BI ? you had mentioned that in your post .
