Great story. Our own local park, Waikaumalo has benefitted in the past from community projects. To my mind, one of the best uses for the so called stimulus funds would be to supply material to volunteer labor.
Unfortunately, I suspect various government factions and the unions will make sure solutions of this type are a rarity. Sad

I'm waiting for some govco inspector to close the bridge because it was built without a permit.

Obie, Remember the saying about asking forgiveness being easier than asking permission. Just fix the road, and if the state really needs to know who did it; reply "Ida".........."Ida Know".

If they decided to prosecute volunteers, it would be the biggest embarrasment to the Lingle administration since the Superferry.

The politics of Kauai are very different than here.

Mabe a major concentration of millionaires on Kauai helped! It is one of the richest islands! There has to be a list of who gave!

Try that at the ponds, and you'll need an EIS.

We don't have a major concentration of millionaires.

The majority of the full time residents who are owners are on fixed incomes. Most renters are working for a living. Most vacation rental owners are trying to pay their place off so they have a place to retire to.

The eis is just one of the hoops we have to jump through.

We have been working on this problem for years now and it just drags on.

Satisfy one agency and a second has objections.Satisfy the second one and the first doesn't like it again. We also have about 6 agencies to satisfy.

I think the Sierra Club should be contacted to file a lawsuit to make sure all the proper permits and studies were conducted before these citizens did what they did. If they didn't follow ALL the permit requirements as outlined in law and if they didn't conduct the proper studies (if required) they should be sued and forced to pay for what is required as well as the cost of the lawsuit PLUS damages if a law was violated, just like the SuperFerry.

No fooling. I bet whoever fixed up the park didn't even donate $30,000+ dollars to Lingle's campaign chest. How can they get by with this?
