RE: Let me make this perfectly clear.... - Samdooby - 06-20-2009 quote: SIR YES SIR!! RE: Let me make this perfectly clear.... - dakine - 06-20-2009 I personally think that to be a moderator must be way hard. To be looking at everything with an eye towards the right and the wrong of it has got to take a large chunk of the fun away. But understandably boards such as PunaWeb need to be moderated. One alternative to the all or nothing method might be to have a 'everything goes' page and just nudge anyone that goes outside of the regular bounds on the other pages over there. That would give those who want/need to go on about something a place to do so without Rob having to think about it and still keep them (and their thoughts) in the community, while at the same time maintaining the integrity of the site over all. It's just a thought. RE: Let me make this perfectly clear.... - csgray - 06-20-2009 For people who want a free for all, some punawebbers who didn't like Rob's rules started a website at punaonline.com They have a whopping 48 members and their most active folder is titled punaweb, but they will let you post darn near anything you want from local to global to personal (toenail pictures anyone?) Lots of insults about how Rob runs his place though, even cartoons criticizing Rob's moderating. I don't get it myself, if you don't like how Rob runs things find another place to play, which these folks did, but they seem to spend most of their time complaining about PW. I just can't fathom how obsessed they are with how Rob runs his site when they have their own. Carol RE: Let me make this perfectly clear.... - oink - 06-20-2009 I happen to like both sites, each for their own attributes. Both have flaws. I'm also a member of other sites. I don't know of any I agree with the management of 100%. I don't know of one where I agree with the views of the other members 100%. Of course I understand that I'm the only sane person, so it's understandable. Pua`a S. FL Big Islander to be. RE: Let me make this perfectly clear.... - mella l - 06-20-2009 LOL Carol, take a look now there are 18 guests! Adverting does help. Wow! and a Lack cartoon, samdoody, oink and jon p camp hang out! mella l RE: Let me make this perfectly clear.... - missydog1 - 06-20-2009 Rob, while you have a topic going that asks us to contact you with any problems - I'm wondering if the email I sent you through Punaweb a couple weeks ago got through. Generally you reply. The email itself isn't important now, or a reply, but I do wonder if the Punaweb email system is working as a way to contact you or anyone, because I had trouble awhile back. LOL, I would email you and ask but if the email fails I would never know. [ ![]() I completely missed whatever topic inspired the warning, but I get the point. RE: Let me make this perfectly clear.... - missydog1 - 06-20-2009 Carol, I checked out the forum, had never seen it before. Right now it is harmonious but the people who belong have a certain unity that attracted them to it, and already knew each other. Punaweb is attracts a wide group of people with nothing to unify them as a group other than Puna itself. Some people are social together and some are not. The viewpoints are all over the map. The discussions are fairly serious. I did like that the splinter group has image hosting and avatars. I wish Punaweb did. It would be neat in the garden and building forums to post photos of our veggies and whiteflies and caterpillars. [:p] I belong to another site that has a "fun group" splinter off, which siphoned off a lot of members, and they did spend a lot of energy mocking the original site. Human nature I guess. People should post where they're happy ... On a side note, while we're sorta off topic but talking about Punaweb - I think the five post a day rule diminished the playfulness of Punaweb somewhat, as you don't back and forth when you are counting posts. A little light chatter is kind of nice for making the site warm and fuzzy. (not that I ever counted my posts, because I started with a low average, but I do think the dialogue changed when the rule came in.) RE: Let me make this perfectly clear.... - knieft - 06-20-2009 Forums have their stages. Over and over again, great and useful forums end up encountering this argument phase. Posts cross a line. The moderator gets hit for trying to bring some order. Raging controversy ensues. Someone starts a say-anything forum, which either ends up a joke, dies, or if it hangs on, eventually has a similar crisis. In well over a decade online, I have never seen a cure-all for this unfortunate forum "de-evolution". Of course, I'm hoping that PunaWeb can somehow hold out, give Rob some respect and get on with it. I don't see any real substitute for PunaWeb...and maybe that is why it will rock on. A moderator's job is very difficult if s/he does it well and is pretty much thankless. I likely disagree with Rob (or anyone!) on lots of stuff, but....SO WHAT? Is there really utility in locking horns online? Thanks for a forum that is the top of its class, Rob. Cheers, Kirt RE: Let me make this perfectly clear.... - kimo wires - 06-20-2009 I have to say Kudos to Rob. I almost got mad enough, toning it down, enough to sign out of Punaweb for good. But then I realized... (took a while) that RT has a pretty tough job, screening all these topics. I wouldn't want the job. When I first logged on PW, I was quite loose with what I would post... But when I realized that I was running into the same People in Puna, as well as on PW, I began to Moderate what I said myself. I felt it was my Kuliana. I started looking at it as if I was talking to human beings that were actually my neighbors. And not just people in cyberspace. You know what? It is. RE: Let me make this perfectly clear.... - hikatz - 06-20-2009 [quote]Originally posted by mgeary PunaWeb is at it's best when people share their Hawaiian experiences with aloha, helping each other, educating each other, even just playing silly sometimes. PunaWeb is at it's worst when egos dominate, and the sharing, helping, and educating turn to preaching and provincialism, with a smattering of intolerance thrown in. This is your website, Rob, and I understand that it exists (or not) at your pleasure, and in the manner of your choosing. If I don't like your rules of Puna-centric civil discourse, I certainly don't have to return. Nobody is pointing a gun at my head to force me to read what's written here. Still, I keep tuning in, because on balance, the better part of PunaWeb shines through most of the time. Aloha! ;-) [/quote) Very well put! [ ![]() Punaweb is very informative, for people living here or thinking of moving to Puna. Covers many areas, plus you can research older topics using the search link. The wealth of knowledge this website contains is incredible, but we lose sight of this because of all the bickering (that is putting it nicely) going on. I recommend Punaweb to many people who have questions about different subjects, with a warning, most people are very helpful, but occasionally you will run into some hostility, just don't let that turn you off. It is good website. People deserve to be treated with respect, given the benefit of the doubt, just be plain courteous to each other goes a long way! Live Aloha (http://www.kapu.com/livealoha.php) Rob, thank you, your vision of Punaweb turned it into a reality, it will be our loss if you ever decided to close it down! |
