I would say Mace or Pepper Spray is a much more humane way to protect yourself than a gun, or a dog if you are only getting it for protection. Guard dogs are generally not treated as well as pets that are part of the family. Tying a dog up is an inhumane thing to do, especially if someone already has a fenced yard or dog run. The only thing worse is letting it roam wild. If you are going to get a dog, at least provide it a loving and safe (for the dog)home. How would you like a collar and tether on you all day long??? Remember, buying/adopting a dog is a commitment to love and care for the animal, including proper vet care for the extent of the animal's life, in the case of most dogs, that is at least 10 to 15 years.
