RE: Your (recent) experience with United - Erlinda - 10-14-2009 We just got back from a trip to the UK on United. All in all it was a pretty nice. I refused to pay their baggage fees so my husband and I each took a max sized carry on and a "personal item" (a large purse for me and a laptop case for my husband.) No problem. It was a long flight so they fed us two meals. They even provided gluten-free meals for me which was nice. (Hawaiian doesn't provide any special meals anymore) I really hadn't wanted to fly United because we'd had some dicey experiences with them before. But they had direct flights to London on a plane configured the way we like (two seats on each side)and an OK price. I have to say I would use them again after this recent trip. In Economy I even had room for my long legs! RE: Your (recent) experience with United - mella l - 10-14-2009 Is it hijacking if I mention a recent HA experience? Oh well here goes, while checking in at the airport from Oahu in July following a cat sitting job, I learned about overweight baggage. My suitcase was 7 pounds over weight and it cost me $50.00 in penalty for those 7 pounds, and that was in addition to the $15.00 I was charged previously for the same said bag. So therefore such as a 57 pound suitcase cost $65.00 total, $15.00 for the bag and $50.00 for the 7 pounds of excess. Just a caution! mella l "I think animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers." RE: Your (recent) experience with United - StillHope - 10-14-2009 Thank you, everyone. Not looking forward to fly United... I hope they'd serve that free champagne ( and free beer to the doggie section )! RE: Your (recent) experience with United - MntnViewBlue - 10-14-2009 Stillhope, I usually fly United and just flew them in August (KOA-SFO-BOS). My experience with them has always been very favorable. This past trip my boarding pass would not print out for me, a problem with my printer and not United. When I got to Kona I had to go to the very busy desk for a boarding pass and when I got to security discovered I had someone elses boarding pass. No worries since I had plenty of time before my flight. I went back to the counter to get the correct pass, the attendant appologized profusely, and started getting my pass. In the meantime, a group of 12 travellers arriving late at the airport are freaking out about missing their plane, on top of all the other passangers trying to get processed. No worries, I had plenty of time, so I told the attendant to take care of the late-comers. She thanked me for my patience and went to help the others while I waited. When she returned she again appologized and thanked me for my patience. As she handed me my boarding passes, she said because I was so patient I had been upgraded to first-class. At the boarding gate it began to pour buckets and three gate attendants took the passengers out to the plane in small groups while holding umbrellas over us, but not themselves. The passengers were dry and the attendants were drenched and pleasant. An overall stellar experiance for me. So, I guess the whole point of this is to tell you that in all my years of flying United I have always been very pleased with their attitudes and how they handle everything which is in their control. If you check United & TSA websites for currant info, arrive at the airport plenty early, and ask United personnel for tips on handling the dog, I'm sure it will be a pleasant experience for you too. P.S. Before anyone asks, I did write United to tell them how pleased I was with their service. RE: Your (recent) experience with United - Carey - 10-14-2009 Beer ice cube in the making???? Throughout the next few weeks, when things start piling up, just take a deep breath & repeat the mantra "I'm coming home", visualize the video link with the drive into Seaview... and Smile in a dreamy way... then get back to it! RE: Your (recent) experience with United - Greta - 10-14-2009 The guys working cargo in Kona for United were wonderful when I shipped my dog. RE: Your (recent) experience with United - aline - 10-14-2009 I dont know where you are flying out of but I used Hawaiian Airlines with my dog out of San Franciso,it was several years ago when they still had the 30 day quarantine but they were very accomodating and wanted to know the dogs name and if they could give him more water if needed and it went well.I was happy with their service and it wasnt expensive to fly the dog then. He weighed 50 lbs,I think I paid $75 back then. Good luck RE: Your (recent) experience with United - missydog1 - 10-14-2009 San Diego, no? That's why it has to be United, IIRC. All will be well. Being warned they are sometimes surly, most likely they'll be nice. RE: Your (recent) experience with United - AlohaSteven - 10-14-2009 Urgh. There are times when one must embrace the inevitable and just know all will be well despite flying United. It can happen; all can be genuinely fine, despite the checkered record. Via voting with my dollars I've not flown United in many years because of too many experiences like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YGc4zOqozo ...but then, since I've not flown United in many years, I do not in fact have recent experience upon which to comment. United would have withered and died on the vine about 15 years ago (and United's stockholders' front yards been long since plowed with salt!) if my experience was universal, so there must be an upside to United these days. )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( Nirvana vs Rick Astley http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NN75im_us4k )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( )'( RE: Your (recent) experience with United - Devany - 10-14-2009 We flew United direct to Kona from SFO with two animals last January. They were great. No complaints. Here are two tips. Plan on three solid hours before boarding. And TIP generously. It is amazing how far $20 bills will get you as far as service. I love Hawaiian, but they had no direct flights. United was awesome. We thought we were only allowed one bag each, but because Wes was a Premiere we could have brought three bags each for free. Oh well. While they could have weighed our bags, the greased palms avoided that. Check in at the curb and tip well, you will be fine. We were allowed one carry on and a purse or personal item each for boarding. I had a big coat to stow, but carried it on as it would not fit in my purse. I am so glad to have donated it to the Sally store since we moved here, but needed it in the SFO area before we left. Best of luck to you and your dog.
