Sam, the breakwater is set on a 'finger' of a lava from the Pana'ewa lava flow (created most of the industrial area of Hilo, plus Liliokalani Gardens & Richardsons ~ 700 AD) off of the lava finger, the depths increase at the bend to over 140' fairly close to the breakwater. The Pana'ewa flow has a unique characteristic of having 'young' flow green olivine and old flow white feldspar. Link for HVO info on the Pana'ewa flow:

Cool beans Carey, sounds about right and makes sense...
We have dove off the BW and swam fairly far out (where people look like ants on the BW) and it was still "only" 30-40ft...
Never been out to the "blue-water" though. Too scary...[
]I know whales have plenty of play-room right past Richardsons. RIght past the rock formations, it gets blue-water real fast. Deep, cold, scary...
And Dev, you would be surprised what is around Coconut Island. I was pole-fishing there once and my friend Alden caught a baby black-tip reef shark. I knew Hammer Heads pup in Hilo bay but to see a baby black-tip was different.
Cool stuff...

We have seen them in the past at the bluffs across from Seaview ocean park. Very close.

We saw whales last Thursday, Oct 22, saw two breach out of the water, down at the sea arch area in VNP. It was cool!

Francine! It was wonderful to meet you and yours on this trip too! We certainly look forward to our next trip and seeing the great folks we met over there again (and the whales too of course since that's what this thread is about :-) We never did make it to Kona - guess that's another trip.

Welcome home Ann! Looks like you had a good time!
We will be back out in December and hope to watch whales from our oceanfront HPP rental as well as on Kaanapali on Maui (some of the best and closest I have seen have been off Maui around Christmas).
