Jerry, I am not sure exactly where the tree was, but I would think that it was probably at the agriculture lab, not on campus. I think that they also have some orchards.

With cutbacks and furloughs everywhere, security to protect physical plants and campus buildings is probably very low on the priority list right now. I do know that this did happen in the middle of the night. I will ask Ken for specifics. I have been at the university early in the evening and never once seen a security person. You can park wherever you want etc. without permits.

Jerry, maybe they need to hire someone like you for security!

Given some recent sentences handed down by the local courts, I expect next to nothing would be done.

Devany, my philosophy of security and that of most State agencies would probably not be compatible.

How much could this amount of longan bring on the market?

In WA we have maple theives that will come onto private property or even state and federal land, drop a huge tree and they are gone with it before anyone is the wiser. These trees can bring in the neighborhood of $30,000 for one tree if there is the right wood in them! It just seems to me that the fruit sold at the market from this theft wouldn't be worth the destruction of the tree. But, as already said, the type of person who did this wouldn't be thinking about that...
