I noticed you took this off of your site, probably a good thing for a newer contractor trying to get local accounts...

after all, I doubt that most tourist are installing grid-tied or off grid systems...

It is one thing for a forum's postings to show up through use of a search engine, and it is another thing entirely to import whole discussions from one forum to another. If solar directs people to a discussion on his site, or starts a discussion on this forum is one thing, but to join a forum and start a discussion for the purpose of then importing people's comments to his site is another thing entirely. If people want to participate in his forum they will, if they don't choose to participate they should have that option, and not have their words appropriated without their permission.

No one is saying the postings are secret 808blogger. But postings belong in the forum where they are written. They are "contributions" and people choose where they contribute. It made me really mad when Damon linked one of my topics to his blog and made an issue out of it there. The conversation belonged here and it felt like a violation to have it appropriated as a news item.

Bloggers should take etiquette seriously.

All forums on the internet are public unless limited to viewing by means of registration. If you do not want your comments seen, you should not post them. The "fair use" policy allows copying of comments, etc. from one site to another, as long as the originating site is given credit.

(I agree that it is not entirely right to do this though)

It might be wise to remember that borrowing comments from one forum to another might well result in undesired comments being placed as well.

Always best to ask and I believe Solar has presented himself (or herself) respectfully.

mdd7000 - with respect I think you are wrong when it comes to fair use (but you are right about making comments publicly). Just giving credit or citing your source doesn't mean you can copy something and publish it. There's much more to it than that. Fair use usually means you can use parts of an article to help illustrate your point (especially in journalism or education) but you can't just quote the whole article, even if you do cite the source. This does apply to online stuff as well although often it's not followed up especially when it comes to news.

For example, if you were to publish an entire research paper that I was the author of, even if it's available for free on the web, you would be in breach of copyright and subject to a lawsuit even if you said where it had come from. I wouldn't be able to sue you (nor would I), but the publishing company owns the copyright in my case and they would likely come after you. On the other had, if you quoted a small part of the paper to help make a point in your publication, then you would be fine because that is fair use.

PS. I'd just like to add that as a member of both punaweb and punaonline I think bitching about comments published on one site in the other is childish and immature and I certainly don't condone it. Each site has it's pros and cons, both fora have had said bitching and it reflects badly on both. I hope it can stop one day soon.

There are decent people in both places.

TomK, just to be clear, not sure if you meant my comment but it was definitely not referencing punaonline. It was about highlighting something of mine on the Tucker blog, from a year ago. News blog, not a forum.
