RE: Caves/Lava Tubes - pslamont - 09-14-2007 If there is enough interest.... we have a large lava tube on our property that bears exploration. It has only been minimally explored so would take a real conscientious effort to do more. So far I am told by the friend who explored it that they made 200 ft up the hill and 100 ft down the hill, that you can stand up in most of it, that some areas are caverns .... only bones found were from a goat. Anyway, maybe we can have a lave tube exploration party if people are interested... hard hats, boots and lights required. Pam Lamont Just another day in P A R A D I S E !! RE: Caves/Lava Tubes - Kelena - 09-15-2007 Does anyone know if there has been any attempt to map the lava tubes (not just the major ones, like Kazumura?). Or are there just too many? RE: Caves/Lava Tubes - Cindy Blankenship - 09-17-2007 Pslamont would it be safe? I guess nobody knows about the Kazumura tour then? I looked at the Websites that HADave had posted and found a number to call. Just wondering if anyone had been. The one I see on the site has what looks like the PVC ladder maybe described in this thread. Even with rebar that seems risky. But I'll go ahead and call and ask some questions since they offer three different tours of varying abilities and the prices seem good. Thanks Cindy RE: Caves/Lava Tubes - pslamont - 09-17-2007 Safe is a relative term. You take appropriate safety precautions and accept risk.... Just another day in P A R A D I S E !! RE: Caves/Lava Tubes - Cindy Blankenship - 09-17-2007 Yes...I guess I favor calculated risk, that is terrain, or rivers or surf spots that have been tested. But caves are new to me and to my 15 y.o. That's why I was asking about the tours. I think we should go with a guide the first time and learn first before heading into a cave we know nothing about when we know nothing about caving. That's just how I like to do things. I thought someone on this forum had gone on the Kazumura tour, but maybe not. http://www.CoconutRoads.com "Taking you to the Hearof Hawaii" RE: Caves/Lava Tubes - Cindy Blankenship - 09-17-2007 After reading what I just posted...guess I'm not much of an explorer am I lol. I did a lot of whitewater paddling on the mainland but only where I new others had paddled. Some had drowned in some of those rapids, so I'm not a total whimp, but I guess I like to know what's ahead, have some skills and then go for it, even if it is risky. Like moving to this island sight unseen. So that makes me a non explorer but not a total chicken? Lol Cindy RE: Caves/Lava Tubes - Carey - 09-17-2007 Cindy, there is an international group (NSS) of cavers that have a chapter on island. This tube runs somewhere near the Volcano all the way down to Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision. The 4 hour tour is only 2 miles, but there are a lot of stopping points where Harry pointed out various things. The tube is behind his property in Fern Acres subdivision. Tube is called Kazumura. Here is the link: http://www.fortunecity.com/oasis/angkor/176/ It's $10/person for 2 hour tour and $20/person for 4 hours. He takes maximum 6 people per tour. You go further into the cave with 4 hour tour and there are neater stuffs than the 2 hours. This requires climbing about 3 ladders and 1 rope. My kids, ages 14 and 16, had no problem. RE: Caves/Lava Tubes - Hanalei - 09-18-2007 quote: Sorry, I could not edit. The above was my post on fodors.com. I would recommend this tour. RE: Caves/Lava Tubes - pslamont - 09-18-2007 A wimp? NOT. A cautiously adventuresome mom... you betcha. Sounds smart to me... Just another day in P A R A D I S E !! |
