RE: County Council given dubious achievement award - JerryCarr - 03-16-2010 The "winner" of this "award" should be no surprise whatsoever to anybody who pays the least bit of attention to local politics. Who else could even come close to the Council in this category? It's a no-brainer. RE: County Council given dubious achievement award - james weatherford - 03-16-2010 Congratulations to the Hawaii County Council. At the time, some people feared that memories would be short and the events of June 16, 2009 would be forgotten by voters. Has that happened? On June 15, I requested the State Office of Information Practices to investigate whether the Council had violated the Sunshine Act in preparing for the reorganization. On June 17, I decided to be elected to the Hawaii County Council, District 5. With these two quotes from June 16, 2009 at hand… “People need to have different opportunities to serve.” J Yoshimoto; and “I have just as much right as anybody else.” E Naeole. And my own on June 17, 2009… “People need to have different opportunities to serve and I have just as much right as anybody else.” +++ In my opinion, the credibility of the County Council has been degraded severely in recent months and years. Given the opportunity to serve, I am confident I can and will make a positive contribution to changing that. Setting: Island of Hawaii Players: Big Island Press Club. Other Players: Readers, bloggers, coconut wireless Scene 1. Lava Tube Award press release released. Scene 2. Press release re-released on public forum. Scene 3. Coconut wireless springs into action. Moral of the story: Don't issue a press release if it's not meant to be a real press release, or if you are terrified of being scooped. Egad! Scooped in Hawaii, will life ever be the same? RE: County Council given dubious achievement award - Timkona - 03-16-2010 One thing is for sure. If you want to know what happened YESTERDAY, read any of the local newspapers. And if timely news is your gig, tune into any of a number of internet outlets. (And the newspapers just can't seem to figure out why they are dying a slow, inevitable death) Liberalism thrives on the double standard. RE: County Council given dubious achievement award - Dave Smith - 03-16-2010 Bob, this has nothing to do with freedom of the press. Embargoed news releases are sent out early all the time for the convenience of the media outlet. It helps them prepare an article in advance. It's a form of professional courtesy. Apparently Rob must have been very tired, because the press release said "**** For release: Tuesday, March 16, 2010 **** in two separate places at the top. That seems pretty clear to me and it's also clear it was ignored. It doesn't take a journalist to figure this out. RE: County Council given dubious achievement award - dcl - 03-16-2010 Geeze, who even looks at dates on stuff like this. Being as ignorant as I am when it comes to journalists, I would not have gotten it either. Why send it out if it is not ready to post? Next time keep it to themselves until it is ready for release. RE: County Council given dubious achievement award - Bob Orts - 03-16-2010 Punaweb wasn't the only place to post the press release on their site. In today's electronic delivery of press releases, many reporters and news organizations have come to the realization that embargos' was a fall back to days when instant communications wasn’t available. It could take hours to deliver the information and that gave the closest entity a leg up. But with today’s instant communications ability, embargos are considered manipulative. What was so important in the release that begged to create so much hostility by an early release? Was it that some bloggers had already gone to bed? Was some busy preparing a startling 12:00 am release to claim being the first to report it? Like I said, within minutes of Rob posting the info, other Hawaii information sources also released it. I get the impression this has little to do with the embargo and more to do with others not being the first. Or is it just an anti Punaweb thing? Since I don’t see anyone else getting their butts handed to them in public, I have to think it was a targeted attack or maybe they just censored any comments that made them look bad. RE: County Council given dubious achievement award - Dave Smith - 03-16-2010 Bob said: "I get the impression this has little to do with the embargo and more to do with others not being the first." This was not exactly earth-shattering stuff. You won't find significant news embargoed as the temptation would be too great, even for some professionals. Believe it or not, faxes and email have been around for some time. Press releases are embargoed because nearly all newspapers now publish in the morning, which means they are prepared the night before and this allows them to get the news out at the same time as their competitors, putting them on an even footing. Again, this was not major news. Tiffany was obviously just trying to help get the notice out. No doubt she'll have second thoughts about it in the future and then Rob and others can get such news from regular media outlets rather than first-hand from the source. RE: County Council given dubious achievement award - Rob Tucker - 03-16-2010 Well I messed up and wish I hadn't, but I did. Simply did not register that there was something time sensitive about the subject. My limited experience with press or media releases was simply that information was being released. So I will just blame myself for being ignorant on news release protocols. Somehow I don't think too much damage was done. Sorry Tiffany. On those rare occasions when I think I have something resembling a "scoop" I would generally just send it on to Tiffany first for more professional vetting and attention. RE: County Council given dubious achievement award - critterlover - 03-16-2010 :::::::::::::making note to self:::::::::: Dear Lava Tube Nominating Committee...for next year....Nah...jez kidding Rob... I applaud your apology. I think it reflects a genuine sense of deference. Actually, apart from the premature release, the idea of the council being on the list, yet again, is unfortunate. Over the years it has made the cut a few times according to the list...should someone explain it is not an award one hangs with pride? I am glad, as the messenger, you were not seriously wounded. “A penny saved is a government oversight.” |
