Yup. Thats what David said at RSI. Since we just got gilligan's island i thought it might be kinda cool to do but it would take my whole remodel budget for it.
Jerry's project is small so it might be feasible to get the look.

Well, the plasti-thatch does look kinda cool.
I hate to be a buzz kill, but I think about teeny leetle pieces of plastic getting ripped off by the wind over time, ending up in the bellies of baby birds out there on Midway.
Probably the real deal would need to be replaced a lot more often, but then it's going to be palm fronds, hala leaves or grass. Super renewable and plenty available in Puna. Also, my experience with these materials is that they eventually make a "green roof" and support all kinds of other cool growing things before they eventually disintegrate. Not ideal for your main habitation, perhaps, but ok for a gazebo/palapa/tiki bar.
Why not make an annual re-thatch party a tradition?
Makes that Tiki Bar Mai Tai taste that much more refreshing!

That actually is a pretty good idea, Mitzi. And the artificial thatch is sure to get detroyed as well. The only thing that stands up is concrete. They can emulate lava, so perhaps they can emulate fronds as well, or you could incorporate impressions of fronds, or, as you suggested, use fronds! It could be very fun for handy people.
