RE: Solar Water Heater or On demand? - jerry - 09-19-2010 If you use a "passive" solar water heater the storage tanks are on the roof above the elevation of the panels. The hot water flows into the tank by convention and you do not need a recirculation pump. You do need a strong roof. There is an electric back up heater in the storage tank but it can be turned off most of the time. The back up is very rarely needed. When it is, it takes about 20 minutes to get hot water. With this system an on demand is not necessary and would be a waste of money.
