RE: Safeway's Deceptive Advertising - missydog1 - 12-12-2010 I have a similar philosophy, Greg. All the things you listed work for me too. I like to shop in a familiar environment. When Safeway runs really good specials on non-perishables, I typically pick up half a dozen, which tides me over so that I won't need to buy them at non-sale prices. There is very little I buy there that is not on sale. Milk is one; cat food another (my stupid fussy cats will not eat some bargain kibble). Safeway has substantially lowered its everyday prices in response to the recession, although not on milk and bread. Lots of other stuff though. I am appalled by the prices of bread there, and sometimes appalled enough to go to Island Naturals. If Safeway is going to charge $6 for a loaf of Orowheat, then local baked is competitive. We have had this conversation before ... but in brief, the smell of the KTA Puainako makes me want to puke. I go in there sometimes when I need an open BOH on Saturday, and I can barely make it through the bank transaction. It stinks and it's always crowded. RE: Safeway's Deceptive Advertising - TheYogi - 12-12-2010 Isn't pretty much all advertising deceptive though? Otherwise, they'd be saying, "Buy our colored sugar water which will give you diabetes and is infused with addictive agents that cause nasty withdrawal for only $1.99" RE: Safeway's Deceptive Advertising - dmbwest - 12-12-2010 Thanks Yogi ... YAWN :0 Kathy, have you checked out Costco Orowheat ? I have exactly the same feelings (for different reasons) about Safeway : ) I love KTA smell BTW : ) aloha, pog RE: Safeway's Deceptive Advertising - missydog1 - 12-12-2010 To each their own, pog ... no, I don't like Costco. I let my membership expire years ago. I don't even want to buy Orowheat. I like the La Brea artisan breads that they sell on the other side and Waimea Foodland. I used to buy bread at O'Keefe & Sons until they went out of business. Coming over here from the Bay Area, I hadn't bought pre-sliced bread (regularly) since the 80's. I don't buy ground coffee or sliced bread if I can help it. I think that they might sell the artisan breads at Sack n Save over on Haili, but it's another store to deal with. I really couldn't care less about shopping any more. Island Naturals has pretty good bread. They have good sourdough baguettes that aren't all dry and hard the day after you buy them. I know, I should bake bread again ... save my money. RE: Safeway's Deceptive Advertising - Greg - 12-13-2010 I splurge a little when it comes to bread. I use the Alvarado Bakeries sprouted breads which contain NO flour, but sprouted whole grains($6.00/ Natch). The Ezekial sprouted breads are good also, but a dollar more. This type of bread is much more substantial than "flour" breads, and some folks may have to acquire a taste for it. I personally can't eat conventional "soft" breads with flour, even if they say "whole grain". Bon apatite! RE: Safeway's Deceptive Advertising - jade - 12-13-2010 When you shop at Safeway make sure you always check your receipts. I have found that they overcharge by 50-75% of the time. They don't always give you the sales price on the reciept. They make it very difficult to see what you are actually charged. I make a game of it. I bet my husband whether they will be right or not. Once I went there and water was on sale for $3.99 a case. I was charged $4.98 + the container fee. I went to the manager where they refunded me the difference but they did not change it in there system. I looked in the lines and several other people were buying the water. I guess they feel it is worth it to overcharge. I guess not many people check there receipts. RE: Safeway's Deceptive Advertising - HawaiiTedd - 12-13-2010 Just a point of information... I've spent part of my career in the wholesale grocery trade, and will agree that retail markup can be 30-45% over a store's wholesale cost. But I will assure you that supermarket's mark up their product more than the 1-2% that Mauka suggests (no offense to Mauka). Even Costco marks items up about 11% based on my experience. Some categories have higher markups that others (i.e. vitamins, and beauty care products). YMMV. TeddOnBass --- Life is the only thing worth living for... RE: Safeway's Deceptive Advertising - KeaauRich - 12-13-2010 Jade, I've had that experience too, but I didn't want to mention it in this post at the risk of starting to sound like Andy Rooney. On the plus side, I have found the local Hilo Safeway staff to be the friendliest, most helpful bunch of any local grocery store - if something's not on the shelf, they'll drop whatever they're doing and check in the back to see if there are any cases lying around. And the manager has, on several occasions, given me Meadow Gold milk at the Safeway sale price if they are out of Safeway milk. My rants were directed at corporate, not the local staff. RE: Safeway's Deceptive Advertising - pslamont - 12-13-2010 I have had great luck shopping at Safeway. You just have to avoid the the dates 2-8 as that is when foodstamps come out. Unfortunately, the culture of poverty compels people to spend that food stamp money as soon as they get it. I find that by the 12th or so the meats will be heavily discounted. Today bought three hams that were originally priced at around $34 for more like $11 each. It was on an endcap in the meat department and it was filled with at least 40 hams, maybe more. I stock up on chickens when they go half price. You just have to look at whgat the meat department is clearing out. I have not paid more then $6 for a chicken since I have been here and usually more like $4.50. Once my special brand of spahgetti sauce goes on sale, I buy a case of it. This is the only way I can put a good meal on the table for the 7 we currently serve daily. I just don't shop for what I want, I go to my freezer for that. I shop for what is available and cheap! I want to be the kind of woman that, when my feet hit the floor each morning, the devil says "Oh Crap, She's up!" RE: Safeway's Deceptive Advertising - Guest - 12-13-2010 Eh, no offense taken. I bow to your superior knowledge of retail grocery markup. Still, 11% isn't much. |
