I use this thing ... it's like 4' wide by 3' long... It's very reliable.
It's called a window!
HahahaTho, I think the best thing to do is mount a web cam on a pole high enough to look out on the horizon to see what's coming.

Kinda a one stop shop for island alerts and weather that I share with my fellow kayak fisher persons (wife loves kayak fishing) we are an Extreme kayak fishing community. If you call 935-8555 it's pretty accurate because they update it every 12 hours. My favorite doppler is "Northeast Pacific Rainbow Color Infrared Loop".
