Heat probably has something to do with it. On the mainland most of you probably stored your stuff in an AC house. Probably not the case on the BI.

If it's heat and humidity, how about storing your pens in the refrigerator?

I wasn't thinking pens. Pens in the refrigerator might not be too bad but keeping your undies and stuff there might be a tad strange. Keep it simple and skip the undies and just wear a sarong or lava lava. Some of the ladies can skip the bras and tops. Thats just a lot less elastic (and foam?) to worry about going bad.
