try either of these sites too -

crashpadder.com or airbnb.com better than arnott's or kalani. (Same pricing in some cases as Kalani's tent camping for a room).

Both have listings in the Puna area.

Camping at Volcano NP is going to be your "safest" camping alternative. There are several private places in Hilo, yes like Arnotts that have tent spots and showers as well. Camping in Hilo for the night makes sense if you are going to be in Hilo or heading north the next day. Mackenzie is nice but if trouble shows up there will be absolutely no one to help you out there.

I would much rather camp at the beautiful new park at Pohoiki. New facilities, large lawn expanse, covered shelters, Ocean access, food vendors, County drinking water, Fire department Water Safety Officers, Childrens playground, plenty aloha.......Smile and you will be smiled upon!

agree

Is the park at Pahoiki the same as Isaac Hale County park? When I lived in Mountain View in 2005 Isaac Hale wasn't always known as the friendliest place. I never had any problems, but had heard stories. However a few people have recommended it since, maybe the renovations have made it more inviting for visitors?

You would hardly recognize the place. it's a real park now.

Not only is Isaac Hale a gem of a real park now, but the vibe has changed, too, IMHO. My last several visits have been delightful, and I met some quite friendly people there.

I would not stay overnight at MacKenzie unless you are part of a large group. As a local reporter, I covered the murder and near-murder of a Honolulu dr. and his girlfriend camping there back in the late 70s or early 80s. I'm still getting contacted about that. There were other people in the campground at the time, including a California EMT, and they were totally unaware of the attack. And I don't think you can count on cell phone coverage there at all.

Issac Hale Park and Pohoiki are one and the same and I agree with Jerry's assessment above. It would be a shame to bypass the wild, coastal beauty of Puna.

I find McKenzie beautiful, but unnerving and a little gloomy for reasons I can't explain. Is it the guy who was washed over the cliff there (he got a plaque)? Is it the father who murdered his son and sent him over the cliff? Is it the way it is hidden from the road, or the invasive, evil and useless ironwoods? Is is the fact that it is dark, while all around there is light? Something about that place. Maybe Frankie has identified it.

My main problem with McKenzie isn't so much the night marcher/murder vibe; It's simply the lack of facilities. About the only amenity I know of there is the Linda Lingle Memorial Pit Toilet. No water or TP. It's a nice place for a day visit or fishing, but not so much for visitor camping. Not so many people either, for share da aloha like Pohoiki!
