The glow from Halema'uma'u is pretty impressive after dark. We used to like to take visitors for the afternoon in the park, catch dinner at Thai Thai in Volcano village, and then swing back through for the night glow. Unfortunately Thai Thai has either changed hands or changed attitude, but we just had a horrible experience there and will never be back.

Chain of Craters road closes at 5 I think, then do dinner, then go to the visitor center after dinner to see the glow from Halema'uma'u. The pizza at the Kilauea Military Camp bowling alley is the bomb. No kidding! Open to the public.

Ed to add; Kiawe Kitchen in Volcano has some great food. A little pricey, but one of my favorite indulgences is their rib-eye steak

"Salad days" is an idiomatic expression, referring to a youthful time, accompanied by the inexperience, enthusiasm, idealism, innocence, or indiscretion [and was all of the above!] that one associates with a young person

The glow has been bright at night off and on for several months here in FF. We have lots of visitors coming next week, they're probably going to take one look at that glow, realize that volcano village is just that, and start running for the ocean. Ha, if you see a bunch of pale people running down the hwy waving their arms around, it's probably some of ours. Wink.

I second that on Thai Thai carol. We'll never go back under current mngmnt. Too bad Sad I'll wager the 17th! That's when wedding sparks will be flying between Jupiter and I.

August 30th is a significant day for me. So I will go with that, although the way it is sloshing around up there suggests it could be tomorrow.

Aug. 6. High noon.

How far does it have to flow to count? Does it have to actually go over the pali? If not, I pick this past Friday the 8th: "two rim breaches of the eastern crater rim occurred yesterday and a minor amount of lava activity continued near the base of the southern crater wall." (From the HVO update on the 9th.)

Oink,
Those were breaches of the perched lake rim inside of Pu'u O'o crater, but it is still rock'n and rolling up there. The webcam has been fun to watch lately. http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/hvo/cams/POcam/

For the purposes of our volcano guessing game: Let's say it just has to emerge from the inside of Pu'u O'o crater and start to go down the outside of the cone. Those little sub craters on the low side count as inside.
