RE: Anyone Been to Target? - rmelzig - 07-28-2011 I haven't been in a Target in years, so I wasn't sure what to expect. (Won't go near Walmart). Target has the sort of merchandise I don't need - long beyond kids and inexpensive housewares. The food items are incomplete so since I'm going to (expensive) Safeway anyway, why not get everything there. OH, Target spirits section is unbelievably skimpy and not priced to interest. (Longs is best for the booze I like). BTW, best value (my opinion) in Safeway is house brand tonic water at $1.25 for 2 liters (.99 for 1) compared to name brands $2.00+ for a liter (or quart?). Worst buy I've found is escarole at the unbelievable price - for a head of lettuce, after all - of $4.50/head. Rick Melzig RE: Anyone Been to Target? - macuu222 - 07-28-2011 Safeway's fresh limes is another killer priced at $1.29 each. Target sells them for .29 cents each RE: Anyone Been to Target? - TomK - 07-28-2011 Spunky - quote: You know, you might be right! When I did find the electronics section (of course in the complete opposite part of the store I started looking for it) it was very sparse so suspect many people got some good bargains - it was also the area where many employees were hanging out! Jerry - quote: I still shop at Safeway because I can find stuff there no other store has (and it now has a very small British section!). It was great in the first couple of weeks but now employee numbers appear to be down and there are long waits at the check out. I also checked how much more I'm being charged there now for the same things I bought at the old place. I reckon overall it's approx 20% more expensive - I'm using my card and using the online saver stuff, but it's definitely much more expensive than it used to be. A few weeks ago I also experienced some particularly bad customer service at Safeway involving a disabled customer they left stranded. Maybe I'll write about that some other time, but their behavior was way out of order and has left a sour taste ever since for me. As for Target vs Walmart, well, I suspect if there's anything I really need to get from either store, it'll likely be from Target, but I'll be interested to see what the place is like 6 months from now. Except for a few things (notably milk), their standard prices have been higher than KTA's for just about everything since 1994 when I first got here. RE: Anyone Been to Target? - pslamont - 07-28-2011 I prefer Target for their housewares. Better designers and quality. I found the Hunts Spaghetti Sauce I use as a base for only $10.2 a can (over $2.25 at Safeway) so I nearly cleared the shelf. Granted we have a large pantry for storage and I love deals. For camping and such, their Greatland house brand is very good. Safeway's new pricing is awful. I haven't figured out a pattern to meat discounts = there may not be one = but I still have found chickens at half price and filled up my freezer. I want to be the kind of woman that, when my feet hit the floor each morning, the devil says "Oh Crap, She's up!" RE: Anyone Been to Target? - Chuysmom - 07-29-2011 Made my trip to Target yesterday. It was fun to wander around and check out the "stuff." I like the housewares also - some nice cast iron stuff. Now, I will say that I bought Chioban yogurt and got home and they were moldy...they are going back to the store and I will get my money back. The Magic Bullet I went for was sold out. I was prepared for that. They have a nicer selection of things in my opinion. Some soup flavors, etc. Tuna was a good buy at .97 ea. Nothing too eye-popping. I still will be happy to shop here. I think we needed the competition and variety. Overall, I gave my trip to Target a B- because of the spoiled food.[xx(] Carrie [] RE: Anyone Been to Target? - DTisme - 07-29-2011 Found two major purchases I couldnt find anywhere else in town - one being a lightweight bedspread. Not only did they have them, I had almost too many choices. I wouldn't compare Target to Safeway, but definitely to Walmart, and it's like 200% better quality stuff. Great on housewares, linens, framing, socks & underwear, bicycles, shampoo & other toiletries and cheapish furniture. (Yup, it's particle board, but it's heavier-duty particle board than sold at WM & a bigger selection) - Glad I don't have to go to Walmart anymore - though I do like their plants. I've been a Target fan for years and looked forward to the opening. Disappointed they didn't have any alohawear for women. Couldn't find it anyway. RE: Anyone Been to Target? - JerryCarr - 07-29-2011 Does anybody know if Target has scrapbooking supplies? I meant to look while I was there, but forgot. RE: Anyone Been to Target? - Hotzcatz - 07-29-2011 I don't shop at Safeway - except once a year to buy Thanksgiving turkeys on sale, don't shop at Wal-Mart, don't think I'm even gonna bother with Target. Cheap junk is cheap junk and we have a severe aversion to paying retail. Kurt Wilson RE: Anyone Been to Target? - dwedeking - 07-30-2011 As I understand the P-Fresh (that's what Target calls the grocery area of the store) strategy it is not to compete directly with the grocery stores as a replacement for your weekly food shopping, but rather to gather additional sales from customers that are at the store for other items (for example, you come in to grab kitchen appliance and realize you need fresh produce to go with dinner that night). This is in response to the mainland lifestyle of over-cramming your schedule so you don't have time to do things in an efficient manner. As an employee (and I was a vendor to Target on the mainland) Target is one of the better of the big-box corporations as far as taking care of it's employees (it was stressed by management at least on the night crew about making sure that employees got enough hours to be eligible for insurance) and the community. My personal take is to avoid shopping as much as possible but I do grab the good deals at target (and get other deals at other merchants in town). |
