RE: Volcano acting up - Kelena - 09-26-2007

Rob, I hope you are right and the flows start veering south over old flows. When you gonna build on your lot in Kehena? There was a pretty three story yellow house there I was interested (since sold), and my agent told me a lawyer owned the lot next door (or nearby) and that he was in Mongolia of all places!

And by the way....HVO reports the lava is heading EAST. There is a "perched" channel, then a lava cascade (oh, great) and then a lower channel. The lower channel is where the action is.

<<The lower channel fed an `a`a flow that extended eastward another 1.8 km (1.1 miles) from its end.>>

Hey, my SO built that lawyer's house - and he was a lawyer in Cali not here.

Yeah, but who built that yellow house? It was really pretty, but too far from town for my boyfriend to support me in the style to which I am accustomed.

Never said in what jurisdiction Rob was a lawyer. He is a lawyer wherever he goes, although he may only be licensed to practice in California.

I think he's in Bali.

I think the a'a is gonna go pahoehoe on us.

When I was living in Ulaanbaatar Mongolia (Coldest capital city in the world) having a home in Hawaii seemed like a real high priority. But, last November I moved to Indonesia. Now that I'm living on one tropical island, the urgency of having a home on another has dimished some what.

I live in Jakarta, one of the most pollutted and traffic chocked cities in the world, but I live in a great apartment complex with a 50 meter pool, great gym and lots of gardens. I get to Bali and the more remote island as often as I can. I just bought a 4 meter "totem pole" made by the Komoro People of Papua, specifically thinking of how great it would look in front of my (yet to be) Hawaii house.

I'm licenced to practice law in California, Illinois and New York, but I'm on inactive status in each. For me, being a lawyer is a state of mind (something my boyfriends, past and present would agree with and complain about ;^).

I looked at the Yellow house and the others for sale in Puna Beach Palisaides. I am thinking of selling or trading my two lots for an already built house, given the difficulties of building while living so far away. Maybe the best time to buy is while the hypothetical threat of lava inundation looms. Maybe not.

Aloha,
Rob L

Bringing us back on topic, almost. When in Bali, you should be aware of the volcanic hazards of Mts. Agung and Batur. Both have violently erupted in fairly recent history.
The third or fourth time Bear and I were there, we climbed a cone inside the caldera of Batur and cooked some eggs on a vent. Agung erupted with great loss of life during a major ceremonial cycle at the temples of Besakih in the early 60's, I think. One of our Balinese friends said the mountain was rumbling before the ceremonies but they had them anyway on the advice of a high ranking religious official who was killed in the explosion. He said something like 10,000 people were killed.

Makes Kilauea look tame by comparison.

Cheers,
Jerry

Yes, the eruptions in Bali have been much more deadly, not surprisingly, since the island and the area around hte volcanos is so densly populated. You can see my photos of Bali from last week at http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=14453&l=f28ab&id=769117192 and http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=14424&l=41b35&id=769117192 You can see some cool photos of Mt Agung and Batur at the end of the second set.

I haven't been to Lombok yet, but am planning to climb the volcano there. I have been to Bandar Aceh (where the Tsunami was), Kalimantan to visit with the orangutans and to Jogjakarta to see Borobudur and the other sites. So much to see here! (If you have face book go to Robert C La Mont for photos of all of the above and my Jakarta apartment and Burma and Bhutan thrown in!)

Aloha,
Rob L

Thank you for the semantics correction Glen! Yes lawyer, no, not lic in this state.

The house I was thinking of the owner's name was not Rob. it is one lot over and across the street Kalapana side from the yellow house. Maybe we have two different houses?
