Just a technical point, Cat! You know those of us in the profession -- can't see forest for the trees. John will remember the yellow house. It is three stories tall and unexceptional to look at from the outside, but the views inside of the ocean and even the surrounding area are breathtaking and the house is very well laid out. Concrete floors. The ocean views though -- wow. Very intelligently designed (by a human). Meanwhile, I feel Jerry's hot breath on my shoulder (which is not unpleasant) so I want to add this volcano update:

IT'S HEADING SOUTH. But really slowly. No threat. Here's how HVO puts it: "The other change was that the lower channel that had been feeding flows advancing east and northeast has now shifted toward the south and a flow may have reached the southern margin of previous flows. The seep-fed flow plodding along the southern margin is still going evidenced by occasional spots of incandescence.".

So, flow stopped going East (thank you!), nothing going on going North (thank you!), and just a little seepiness heading South (not bad!).

Hopefully it's pooling so it can spill over to the south - maybe make some new channels in that direction where nothing gets harmed.

HVO published a map update on their website a little earlier today. http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/kilauea/update/maps.html

It shows just about all the new lava in the past few days has indeed been heading along the south margins of the flow. Let's hope it keeps that up, or better yet, goes back to Puu Oo.

Cheers,
Jerry

An earlier post had asked about vog readings near the park.
The USGS posted this link today: http://www2.nature.nps.gov/air/webcams/parks/havoso2alert/havoalert.cfm
Looks like it updates every 15 minutes.

Are you a Lawyer Glen? Admitted in Hawai'i?

Aloha,

Hey, not to change the topic here, but we have been driving home after dark from Hilo to Hawaiian Shores and at the 9 mile marker the other night it was an awesome sight to see the red glow from the Volcano. It was the first time I caught a real good look at it. Actually looks closer than I had thought.

Rob, Admitted in California, but not Hawai'i.

As for the glow, at the Kite Fly in late August, Vince said that he could clearly see it from Kahakai Blvd in the mornings. It was noted on Lemewai in HPP as well (by ST).

It is just sloshing around up there in a big ditch that wants to crust over, but is having trouble doing so just yet.

Carrie, I almost get a nightly light show from my house in HPP on 3rd Ave. depending on cloud cover. My eyes are getting bad, but I swear I even started seeing lava this past week too! I don't think it's a red light bulb I'm looking at on someone's porch?

It's so bright, and I have never been able to see the glow from Kahakai, I only live three streets from Vince, so don't know why. It was a very clear night when we stopped at mile marker 9. There's a clearing of the Ohias in that area and a straight path to the red glow.
