Oahu needs to be quarantined. Maybe Maui too.

According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, our governor is refusing requests by "some" neighbor island mayors to resume the interisland quarantine. He does, however, have a fantasy about allowing Japanese tourists back in, which is mainly what this article is about. Be forewarned, the S-A often quickly puts such locally produced material behind their paywall:

Fake news. quarantine waiver available to those who can produce test results that aren't actually available.

Fake news #2: COVID19 is alive and well in Japan.

Over 1000 new cases/day for 5 days in a row. Sounds safe, let's invite them to Oahu.

Fake news.

The information & statistics on COVID-19 moves so quickly it’s more a matter of old news or slow news, rather than fake news.  The travel agreement between Hawaii & Japan was discussed when, over a week ago?
Given current conditions we may not want Japanese tourists showing up on our doorstep with their recent COVID-19 spike, and Japan may not want visitors from Hawaii either, with our 200+ cases reported today.

Not slow news or fake news, but no news:

https://www.civilbeat.org/2020/08/house-covid-committee-we-need-more-info-from-health-department/

When a House committee can't get answers from the State Department of Health, how are we supposed to manage anything or make any kind of informed decisions?

Note also that today's "record high" 207 includes a backlog of 114 cases from the weekend -- spread the numbers out and they don't look so impressive, so no reason for you to buy a newspaper.

I can hardly wait for tomorrow's misrepresentation.

Hawaii has a low caseload not through informed, skillful management of the virus, but mostly basic, left edge bell curve dumb luck:

Travel bans may sometimes work for remote island nations, but in general they can only delay the spread of an epidemic—not stop it.

America has failed to protect its people, leaving them with illness and financial ruin. It has lost its status as a global leader. It has careened between inaction and ineptitude. The breadth and magnitude of its errors are difficult, in the moment, to truly fathom.

"Note also that today's "record high" 207 includes a backlog of 114 cases from the weekend -- spread the numbers out and they don't look so impressive"
------------------
207 cases Aug.3 + 45 cases Aug.2 + 87 cases Aug. 1 + 114 unreported = 453 / 3 = 151 cases average over the last 3 days.

You're right, I'm not impressed.

RE: COVID-19 confirmed in Hawaii: 607+ cases 16 deaths - kalakoa - 08-04-2020

"207 includes 114" so Monday is 207-114 = 93.

Assuming equal distribution, 114/2 = 57.

Saturday 87 + 57 = 144
Sunday 45 + 57 = 102

As an average: (87 + 45 + 207) / 3 = 113.

Perhaps someone can suggest better math, but each day's numbers make those before irrelevant.

Meanwhile, Ige "will be making a further determination" on his not-really-a-plan to waive traveler quarantine:

https://www.staradvertiser.com/2020/08/03/breaking-news/hawaii-tallies-record-207-new-coronavirus-cases-after-missing-data-over-weekend-deflated-counts/

Sift through the meager facts to find the mention that State DoH only has 77 contract tracers, and most of them aren't full-time. Lt Gov Green says we need at least another 400.

Tourists keep coming, though, because of the "quarantine loopholes" that nobody can seem to deal with.

This virus has really made apparent how many stupid people we live with, and the consequences of lack of leadership. We suffer fools and rationalize their actions, then something like this comes along and the depressing reality sets in.

What does Ige do all day?

RE: COVID-19 confirmed in Hawaii: 607+ cases 16 deaths - My 2 cents - 08-04-2020

Kalakoa - Yep, I counted the 114 twice. Oops.

How refreshing it is to know that our daily average for the last 3 days has only been 113.

Maui Mayor has been formally asking the gov to reinstate the inter-island quarantine, but Harry doesn't want it. I guess he wants to wait for the horse to leave the barn before closing the door.
