RE: Introduce yourself - Gloria E - 10-24-2006

Mella and Carolann - Thanks for the welcome. We are looking forward to meeting all of you.

Ron arrives next Wednesday, but will be in Honolulu the next week with his new job, then back to the Big Island. Too bad he will miss the Punaweb Party. We are both a little "nutted up" trying to get so many things done before he leaves.

Carolann - we must be neighbors, as our little house is in Hawaiian Shores also. We look forward to meeting you neighbor!

We're on He'e Gloria - where is your home?

RE: Introduce yourself - Gloria E - 10-25-2006

Carolann - Our little hale is on Moana. Our son has lived there for over five years and Ron will be moving in with him. Not sure if we will stay there and add on, or buy another one a little bigger.

We are still a little stunned at how sudden this came up. Even though we were planning to move over in a few years, this job offer was a surprise that we just "went for it."

I've enjoyed your posts when you were looking for property to make your move and was glad to see you chose Hawaiian Shores. We have loved it there.

I've also read your posts on the liliokoi - we spent about a week in September cutting an out-of-control liliokoi off of some beautiful palms in our yard on Moana.

Wish I was there now! Gloria

P-shawwww! No such thing...you just need a GIANT blender, yeah?

This area is so lovely and walkable...Moana...you're closer to the ocean...very nice.

RE: Introduce yourself - Heather T - 02-14-2007

Aloha ,
As we get closer to realizing our dream of moving to Hawaii, I thought it was about time that I introduce my quirky family. My husband and I have been lurking for the last few years and have appreciated all the information that has been posted. With that being said, we felt like we should just roll up our sleeves and jump in!

My name is Heather, I am a secular home school Mom, Scout Leader, and kid’s summer Camp Director, to fund these non-paying positions, I work as an ethnic food buyer and grocery Manager. My better half is Fred, he likes to sail and works as a special projects Manager in import/export (food of course!) and is the official camping porter for my troop. We are food groupies and our interests seem to revolve around the merits of cheese, olives, artisan bread, homemade wine, gardening, books, and music. We would love to open an old world style deli/bakery/wine shop in Puna.( Would love some feedback on this idea, if anyone would like to share their thoughts.)

We had originally planned to retire in Hawaii ( we are early 40’s) however, after a series of unfortunate events in the last two years, (I had a wall collapse on my head, and my husband had a dully truck that landed in the windshield of our new car, while he was at a light.) After these little episodes, we felt that we should follow our dreams sooner than laterJ .There is nothing like having a little sense knocked into a person to realize there is no point in waiting!

Fred has relatives that lived on Hawaii, Oahu and a few reside on Kauai. He spent much of his youth on the Islands. One of the great things we have in common is our love for Hawaii. We are pretty easy going and very seldom cranky, unless it snows… hate the cold and for some un-godly reason I always tend to always slip, slide, and fall in front of a gaggle of school children. We live on the outskirts of Seattle and this year has been particularly nasty.

The heir to our modest castle is 14 she plays guitar, bass, and mandolin, dabbles in photography, and studies Japanese sword fighting (which hopefully means she won’t date anytime soon, Fred seems to think that a young man might be intimidated by a sword welding teenage girl) .

We have two cat’s that will come with us and one bearded dragon that will be adopted by an Auntie. At this point we are packing up and getting rid of 16 years of stuff, and should have our house on the market by April, which hopefully will sell somewhat quickly (within 6 to 8 months) after that we will look for our little patch of paradise. We are looking forward to joining your lovely community and making new friends.

Sincerely,
Heather & Fred

RE: Introduce yourself - Momi - 02-14-2007

I guess I should take the time to introduce myself now. I am a true blue local girl who was raised in Kane`ohe. My husband and I own our home in S. Kona where we live during the week and spend most weekends in Hawaiian acres which is land my mom bought when we were young and struggled with the payments. We have since bought that three acres and built a farm shack until we can afford to build a real house there. We are pumping in as much fruit trees, herbs, and medicinal plants. I have two wonderful and kolohe boys one is 18 and the other is 9. We are native hawaiians and my field of interest is Ethnobotany which is the native uses of plants for weaving, kapa, food and hawaiian medicine.

I strongly believe in respect for the Hawaiian culture so my posts reflect that.

My husband is a roofer and therefore, works in Kona for the most part so we are planning to retire in Puna when all our fruit trees are bearing and the medicinal plants are usable. We have particular interest in the cultivation and growing `awa.

Heather, I don't know what kind of demand would be there for a store like that but I can tell you if you ever open one I will be one of your regular customers!

Heather - another foodie! I used to think John Rabi & myself might be the only foodies in Puna but I have met a lot of them lately.

The only thing I will really miss about Atlanta is the many bakeries & gourmet shops. I will really miss Whole Foods too but they are opening one on Oahu later this year so the BI can't be far behind. I'll never forget one year on vacation when one of my friends suggested I check KTA for olive oil. They highly recommended the Bertolli, ugggg. At least I knew better than to waste the $3.29.

My dream is to open a foodie type shop with a mix of specialty chesses, olives, imported & small farm specialty items. I'd want to have a small but good selection of cookware & impliments. Maybe do cooking classes. That dream will not be likely since I am not loaded with the cash needed to do this.

A few years ago there might not have been much of a demand for this type store but I think there would be now. I think your location would be best in Hilo or Keauu as you would broaden your customer base.

A good chef = 85% high quality ingredients, 5% creativity and 10% passion for food.

Pardon my typos everyone. My internet connection at home is on the fritz and I am sneaking this in while at work so it's rushed! Hey, what's more important than punaweb.

RE: Introduce yourself - Andy - 02-17-2007

Hi all,
Been lurking for a while. My partner,Tom, and I are planning on moving to the Puna area within the next 3 to 5 years. We love all of the islands but think the open space, the climate and the attitude have made us decide on the Puna area. We need to finish fixing up our current home before we put it on the market. We own a small nursery and landscape company as well as host and produce a local gardening TV show. We are thinking with the equity we have in our current place in San Diego we can buy a home and property and have enough left over to live on until we get settled in Hawaii. Anyway, I am just beginning this process so I am so grateful to have found this forum and all of its information and ideas. I am hoping the real estate market in Hawaii will be stable for a bit and the market in California will pick up.
