RE: why do the police here have such fancy rides? - Carey - 09-18-2013

We found out last December that most of the police cars (marked or unmarked) in this county DO NOT have any recording devices. 2 of Puna's finest were following a suspect right into our parked car around midnight...neither had any recording devices....or idea of the description/lic # of the vehicle they were following... our 'silver chariot' sustained enough damages to have totaled it if we filed a claim...and with no vehicle info, no way to pursue the culprit...if insured.... (OK, she is old - but still had no scratches prior to this)

As I reported here then, Puna's finest asked me if I got the vehicle info, after I explained that I was in my house asleep when the car hit our fence, gate & car....

Even more fun is the fact we now have HD video of that area... boy, were the officers surprised when next contacted for kids messing with a neighbors house.... we had very clear video pictures of the kids & the officers vehicles recorded, with the times they were in our neighborhood... interesting fact is that was the last time we have had kids messing around on our street...

Add:

But to bring it back to the question, WHY did the county require a much higher standard for the marked officers vehicles than most department require, but allow the officers to use much lower standards on the unmarked vehicles than most departments allow...

I would think that if they really felt the higher standards for the vehicles were necessary for the county force, than they should require it for the officer owned vehicles...

all I see here is a bunch of complaining, I'll bet most of you are haole's and have been in Hawaii less than ten years, I am Haole too but have been here most of my life, I have traveled the world and respected all cultures in how they deal with things in their politics, here is no different, get a life or go home!

Thank you, Steve.

Let's all find something more constructive to do with our time.

Especially in these times of no money.

As others have either said or implied, what bugs me to a certain extent is not the subsidy money, etc., etc. but they way many of the private cars are either blinged out or outfitted to look like paramilitary vehicles. To me it smacks of unprofessionalism. When I see a police car I want to see a police car, not a guy wish-fulfilling some adolescent dream. Having standard issue cars would boost their credibility as serious officers. My opinion, anyway.

Another thing I just realized writing that is that in the time that I've been here I think I've seen a grand total of a single female officer. What's up with that?

I've noticed the same about the lack of female officers hunt! Most surprising that the (literally) only one i've seem was grossly obese. You could probably skip circles around her singing "puff the magic dragon" as you puffed on your dragon : )

Not endorsing the above. I just don't see how an overweight cop is of any use to anyone. I'm not talking chubby either i'm talking type II diabetes.

Nasty, really nasty. You don't like it here, you have choices.

I have dealt with several female officers here, they all were quite fit and very professional. I have dealt with several male officers who were neither, so I don't think this issue really has anything to do with gender. All of my interactions with the female officers were in Hilo, so they may be mostly working in the more urban areas.

Agreed Carol,
Wasn't trying to single out females, just an observation. I've also seen grossly obese male officers.

Hawaii County was the first Department in the State to have a female reach the position of Major. There are several female officers, many of them work in Kona and Waimea district. They cannot be hired unless they apply and pass the tests.

There ARE vehicle requirements and have been since the General Orders were written 50 years ago. These subsidized vehicles are ALSO THE PROPERTY of the OFFICER, yet you want to demand what they drive? Tell you what Dragon how about you being forced to drive nothing but a Moped. That is your only choice, so live with it. See how fair that sounds? How about YOU go pay for the 600 + vehicles that are needed to just START this switch over. Take it out of YOUR pocket and keep your damn hands OUT OF MINE.

As was stated by others, no one is forcing you to stay here, you are free to go live in Florida, California or NY, where you can get beaten or shot by the police instead.
