the old kaikado building is gorgeous, however if you visit la magic pan you will discover they appear to not believe in janitorial service - that place is filthy.

if that wasn't bad enough they claim to be a french restaurant - i have personally witnessed the employees using their microwave on crepes/eggs

this is a big no no if you've ever been to france. microwaves are not in french restaurants.

Never underestimate the power of the dark side.

Good to know! (I have only shared the desert crepes on indulgence whims with friends, as hubby is not a crepe lover...)

We ate at "Pineapples", the "new" place that resides where Casa de Luna used to be on Kilauea. (We thought we were going to Casa de Luna and found out about the change when we got there). Looks like the same operation, just a different name and menu. I have to say, I was NOT impressed. Everything we ordered looked beautiful but had no FLAVOR. I had the kalua pork tacos... tasted like they forgot the "kalua". Was served along pinto beans which were quite uninspired- like they were making refried beans but just stopped 1/2 way through.

The appetizer- cheese puffs... my wife wouldn't eat any after her first one. Again, they forgot to add flavor.

Wife had the scampi. She said they were good, not exceptional, but overcooked. About 6 shrimp served along side a medium sized portion of extremely bland spaghetti noodles in a bland cream sauce. $24 for 6 overcooked shrimp and noodles.

We really like Casa de Luna. But the new place- we won't be going back.

terracore:
In comparison to Casa De Luna Pineapples is a joke.
Went to Casa de Luna several times, really liked it, tried Pineapples once at the insistence of a friend- neither of us will go back. Insipid and uninspired, and as you say, bland.
I enjoyed Casa de Luna, Spanish, Mex and sometimes what could be best described as kind of Catalan.
But the Tapas!!!!!! Yum.
No more.[V][V]

We only went to Pineapples when they had just changed the formula (same family owns, but brother Dave is on a long tour of Europe..)...we had good service & food, but within a week, the feedback we had from others was not good, both in service & food quality... the thread on both Casa de Luna & Pineapples:

I'm really curious about the restaurant Dayna chose. Hope we get an update!

Just to pile on the negative comments re: Pineapples, after our abysmal experience there (described in the other thread Carey listed), I went to Pineapple's website and clicked on the "Contact Us" link. The page stated "We'd love to hear from you!," so I wrote a long polite letter describing our visit and how disappointed we were with the entire experience. It's been over a month now, and I have yet to receive any type of response or acknowledgment from management. Trust me, I wasn't looking for a free meal or anything, but a simple "We're sorry" would have been nice. Clearly they don't have any inkling of what customer service is all about, which is why I still predict they won't be around long.

Tom, I am pretty sure that Dayna may agree with Terracores' description.... but, of course that is not always true with wives & DH's!

RE: Hilo fancy sit down dinner - dayna - 02-01-2013

Tom, Carey is right! Terracore is my husband. The food was really awful.

Silly me, I didn't realise terracore was your husband, Dayna! I'll try not to forget in the future! Sorry about the experience in Pineapples though. I've never eaten there.
