Yes.. a Costco.. And some cool parks. How about a nice 20-40 acre park that has a lot of space to walk on a path, Maybe a dog park and Frisbee golf? How about a REAL nice sidewalk going down kahakai from say beaches park to the ocean. Hmmmmm.... drive through coffee shop? Maybe a really nice vegetarian restaurant with reasonable prices less than 10 bucks for a meal deals.
Dunno how does one get involved. I don't mean RED tape government BS. But a REAL grass roots effort to just get stuff done that's needed for and by the people. Not just 50 meetings on why we need it with mostly lot's of hot air but no action. Heck, even if one got together with a bunch of volunteers to make some nice walking paths graded and gravel would be better than nothing.
Would be nice to get "behind" something that was worth while and actually accomplished a few goals a year. Not just show up at some poorly planned meeting that all you do is waste your time and go nowhere since no one can agree on anything.

kalakoa may be onto something re online shopping and parcel delivery ... there are private contractors that deliver those services, too...?

My impression from this is that you are looking at something an individual investor could pull off, so I won't suggest manufacturing plants, Costcos, Lowes, or anything else that requires the approval of a board of directors from a multi-national corporation.
Puna having rural poor farming folk, it would be nice if there was a fair farm supply store. Yes, I realize that we have Pahoa feed but we can't afford to shop there except for emergency items, even after factoring in the cost of gas to Hilo and back. Also, there are things we need that are so expensive in Hilo it is cheaper to drive from Pahoa to Waimea and back to get them. This makes no sense because the barges drop the stuff off in Hilo and it gets trucked to Waimea. Right now to "affordably" stock our farm we have to strategize trips to Waimea (usually when coming back from Costco), Hilo, stuff from Amazon, we even get some livestock feed from Walmart on occasion. Wouldn't it be great if there was a place in Pahoa where we could get hay, chicken feed, alfalfa cubes and pellets, livestock medicine, parrot and dog food, etc etc etc?

How about a Keaau - Pahoa Bypass traffic report? Every afternoon from 4-6 PM someone could ride a scooter up & down the side of the highway between Milo Street and the transfer station. The traffic status could be sent to Puna bound drivers either by text subscription, or find a Hilo radio station that wants a few thousand more listeners every afternoon, in addition to Keaau & Pahoa advertisers. If there's an accident, or the cars are backed up several miles, people in Hilo could get in a half hour of shopping before the jam clears out.

Pretty sure Seeb forgot to include "at reasonable prices that Puna folk can afford".
Last time I visited: Pahoa Battery had some lovely PV panels ... at $5/Watt!
That shop in downtown Pahoa (across from 7-11) has a lovely "starter kit" ... at $4/W!
These prices DO NOT HELP ANYONE other than the retailer....
