Personally I have walked out or frequented the kalapana area all my life and never would I think there was a cult or any kind of European gangs out there. Hawaiians pretty much own most that land and only twice was I asked to leave by very large Hawaiian men, at sensitive times due to the lave invasion. Why so many missing persons (on big isle) I am not sure?. Maybe because many more places to hide or be hidden?. A few have gone missing in Kalapana but I think it may be blown out of proportion a bit. The terrain certainly has had even the locals disoriented or lost at times, due to hydration, footing, and miles of similarities. All this is only my opinion, I have walked Kalapana alone at all hours, all over out there many times, never any bad vibes or real problems. All that said now, I did see cars that were broken into, flattened tires, and broken glass, even tickets for illegal parking. I did see plenty of badly guided so-called tours, heard of serious threats made, seen a few battle wounds of beat downs all in Kalapana. Not saying its not possible but I don't think there is a cult, just some large Hawaiian ohanas trying to adjust to this faster way of living, and an abundance of un-educated tourist not walking the yellow brick road, AND way to many kids bored just cruising with nothing to do until they reach the END of the road.

About the Japanese tourist, there is a forest at the base of Mt Fuji where people go to kill themselves. I admit that I am cultivating a stereotype about Japanese people being prone to suicide but they do have a high suicide rate because conformity is so much a part of their culture and if you don't fit n it is hard on you as an individual. I don't know if the "suicide forest" thing is unique to Japan but I thought about it right off when learning of the Japanese visitor being missing in that area. If you google japanese suicide forest you will see lots of pics of people who have hung themselves and are still hanging there after what is obviously a long time.

Of course if it is not the missing Japanese tourist then that background is irrelevant.

My gut tells me that if you were trying to cover up a murder you might likely throw the body in the ocean but you would not hang it in a tree. If you did murder someone by hanging or simply hung them afterwards you would do so because you wanted the body found that way and most people would not stage the scene in such an out of the way place. The body did after all remain un-found for some months. For those reasons at this point I strongly suspect that it was a genuine suicide. I acknowledge that neither I nor anyone else really has any business harboring excessively strong opinions on this matter because we are all rather distant spectators who are not in possession of the facts. My strongest criticism of what I have read on these pages is that there are so many strongly worded opinions when none of us has the wherewithal to have such opinions.

I could be very dismissive and just say you don't know what the eff you're talking about and make it all a big joke and say you don't know you ass from a hole in the wall but better just to give you an education instead. Hawaii has a long history of "cult activity". Here are a few links for you to go through to hopefully help broaden your mind. Granted, not all the "cults" listed are related to The Big Island but there are some directly related to this island. It's not a far stretch to say that some "cults" are not on the radar and openly advertising "Hey! we're a cult!" but they are here.

See? the thing I hate about the internet these days is any idiot with $200 and a ride to Wal-mart can get a computer and be online or surfing the web by the afternoon. It doesn't make you smarter and it doesn't make you more "tuned" in just because you have internet access and a few megabytes of RAM. If you don't know your history...well, lesson over today children.

This is one of the cults from rene's list;

"Seven have bought property on the Big Island in Hawaii, with the plan to form a co-housing community, supporting themselves with a health spa and, yes, a restaurant. Given the Family’s vast scope of knowledge about nutrition and the healing arts, and even home births and deaths, both much more widely accepted today, it actually makes perfect sense.
"

They sound extremely dangerous, and probably even use Marijuana.

Everyone knows it's true! Hell even I sacrifice a chicken in my crock pot once a week. It just so happens tonight is that night. I'm washing my robes in preparation right now. Wink

so Im guessing Cinderland is a 'cult' in your eyes .... but where is the religious part??

Cinderland... the 'cult' that serves free Pizza and Tacos to any who shows up, plants fruit trees, and has bonfires while playing drums and singing...

in reality Cinderland is a Hui

Hui means club/gathering/meet/join/partnership/union
