RE: Meat Animals - Guest - 03-19-2014

I was hoping i'd be raising and butchering some of my own meat, but after watching several "how to" videos on how to humanely butcher rabbits and chickens, I am not so sure I still have it in me.

Maybe, raise them and trade some to someone who would kill and butcher them ?

Oneself, I am happy to kill and butcher for you, or trade, or whatever. I have no problems with the killing butchering part. You might find you don't either. I know how happy my animals are, they are all "pets" up until the second I kill them. I also use the quickest humane methods available to me to lessen any suffering. I find that if they are used to handleing that butcher day is just like any other day for them and it's not stressful for them. Smile

If anyone just wants a tutorial I'm also happy to have you come out to my farm on butchering day and learn how to humanely butcher rabbits and chickens. I never charge anyone anything for that. I just think it's an important skill for people to know how to do, even if you end up never needing to do it, at least you know how.

Also as a side note, it's VERY important I think when raising farm animals to know how to humanely euthanize all the different types of livestock on your farm in at least 2-3 different ways. I would hate to see one of my livestock in a position of pain and suffering or in an emergency and not know how to safely, humanely and cleanly end their suffering.

Dayna,

I'm interested in coming over and just watch how you do the butchering on chickens sometimes, maybe in the Summer. Right now, I'm trying to gain back energy and strength from last month illness. Do you leave the skin on your butchered chicken, or it all comes out with the feathers?

I have eight beautiful ducks, six females and two drakes. Last year I gave away three young drakes, because I could not do the killings and don't even know how. But I love duck meat, skin and all.

kaialoha, thank you for your comments. yes the big island is a wondrous place for growing things. I do choose to eat mostly fresh grown food, however a vegan lifestyle just isn't my cup of tea.

Iju, not a problem. Just let me know when you are feeling up to it. I do leave the skin on my chickens, I pluck the feathers.

Ducks are HARD to pluck. Really really hard! But it can be done, just takes a long long long long time. Smile

I couldn't trap a pig for later use since it would turn into pet and couldn't kill it. I plan to shoot 4 leg ungulates in the wild from a distance with no dogs- we'll see how that works?

Also I rather have fowl for just the eggs since don't yield that much meat. I rather shoot one bigger animal and store the hindquarters in a chest freezer.

Also can make ham in a smoker. Since not too much mangos in Puna marinate with guava and lilikoi puree.

Butchering is so messy. Does anyone on here eat the African snails? I think they were brought here originally for food (but I could be mistaken). How would you "farm" those big snails? Where exactly are they? I've never seen one. What exactly does one taste like? I suppose like escargot, but it's been years and years since I ate that.

I read the issue with the GALS is that they may carry Rat Lung Worm and if the GALS are not properly prepared there can be a transmission of the Lung Worm Disease. Google it ~ ~ ~ Aloha
