RE: Recent flow activity - unknownjulie - 06-28-2014

The report this morning says that the lava tube might be totally blocked now, by the collapse. Opinions?

Look how fast the lava was flowing from the collapse yesterday!

Looks like HVO was right with regards to when to start worrying about the Kahaualea II flow - they said it was a long ways off (of Pahoa/HWY130) and that a lot could change before that happens. Well, this is the kind of change they were referring to. It looks like the K2 flow could be over, but time will tell for sure.

OK, so I am slightly confused. If the K2 flow has stopped, but this river of lava is flowing nearby- is this considered a "new flow"? Is this river of lava flowing towards 130? Thanks

Yes Julie, a new flow, and yes it's still flowing in the same general direction towards the densest populated part of Puna. In the short run this may have slowed the forward progress of the overall flow activity in relationship to developed property, but in the long run I suspect this is making the potential for long lived flows in this direction much greater.

The large amount of flow.. volume.. distance traveled etc., seen in yesterday's onset of this new flow I assume is a function of how much lava that was perched within the Puu Oo crater was released. Future flow rates would be a function of how much magma is coming into the system from the summit of Kilauea. Though I suspect with the absence of forest to flow through the new flow should advance relatively rapidly in the short run. Fun, eh!?!

SBH, I was shocked to see how fast the lava is moving. Thanks for posting that vid.

RE: Recent flow activity - Tink - 06-28-2014

Looks to me like it's traveling about 25-30 mph. Anyone up for shooting the flume in an asbestos lined canoe? I hope the slow stuff wasn't a "plug" that finally pushed its way through, and now we have the really hot stuff draining from Kilauea. Have to watch the level in the crater closely. I wonder if those k-rails (the concrete walls you see when they do road work) will divert if anchored properly.

Are you a human being, or a human doing?

Go look at the electronic tilt. Wow. A huge amount of pressure was just let loose.

I am finding this extremely entertaining also! Wow. Let's see where it goes!
