RE: Puna Driving Tips - TomK - 08-28-2014 When waiting to turn right onto a main road from a side street, wait 10 seconds carefully observing the car coming towards you in the right lane so you can calculate the exact moment to pull out in front of it forcing the other driver to slam on their brakes. This can also be done turning left, but you have to time it correctly so the drivers in both lanes have to take avoiding action. For greater effect, after turning onto the road, take a good two minutes to get up to speed once you have figured out how to stay in lane. RE: Puna Driving Tips - Mimosa - 08-28-2014 Always back into parking spots - so when you leave you can just go and not have to back out and then go. When the light turns yellow, always speed up before it turns red,so you are not stuck at a 2 minute light. Never go the speed limit, either 5mph more or 5mph less. Always talk and text when stuck in the Puna Crawl near humane society. Always watch out for the Japanese tourist as they drive on wrong side of road and never remember here . Stop signs just mean slow to 5 or 10mph and turn, never stop unless a blue light is within 300 yards. Know when police shift change is 3 times a day,so if you have expired safety or anything else, can always have free passage for that 1/2 hour window. Never use turn signals in the day light hours,it is only an option. Not the law. Watch out for people with out of state plates, they drive the most crazy. Wild Pig always will be the most B-52 especially when wild fruit is all over in season. Always STOP for school buses flashing lights state wide. RE: Puna Driving Tips - lavalava - 08-29-2014 Feel free to make your own rules and drive how you like - everyone else does. RE: Puna Driving Tips - Peter Easterling - 08-29-2014 If you are driving drunk, drive very fast. This will minimize your time on the road. It's simple common sense. RE: Puna Driving Tips - Todd H - 08-29-2014 What is the purpose of the painted zig-zag lines? I have not seen them in any US states, except for Hawaii. Todd RE: Puna Driving Tips - punafish - 08-29-2014 quote: Same advice when you're low on gas: drive really fast to the closest gas station before you run out. RE: Puna Driving Tips - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 08-29-2014 If you are driving drunk, drive very fast. Same advice when you're low on gas: drive really fast. Who needs a reason to drive fast in Puna? My guess, 60% no reason to drive fast, 30% have a reason (drunk, gas, late, hungry, thirsty), 10% speedometer broken, or tires too big so speedometer is wrong. RE: Puna Driving Tips - kalakoa - 08-29-2014 In Puna there is only one place you can drive really fast... RE: Puna Driving Tips - bananahead - 08-29-2014 better learn how to read traffic when turning onto a hwy! Your life and other depends on it... we dont have many of those red/yellow/green light thingys with only one traffic signal for every 45 square miles, you will need to rely on common sense, so pay attention and quite being a hesitant undecisive woose, ......Anticipate!, dont pull the 'wait and see then go slowly' BS... those cars ziping towards you are usually going hwy speeds, not 25... obviously when you have only 11 traffic signals in an area thats 27 times larger than BerkeleyCA....... some intersections that should have help, dont, and are dangerous! one thing saving us from 25+ traffic fatalities/yr, IMO, is the lack of booze in most homes and lack of corner bars! Puna's homegrown PunaButter tends to keep speeds lower overall on our bad narrow 'roads'... or those excessive bongrips will knock people out completely before dusk so they arent even on the roads on a rainy night... If Puna was a college town, with our unlit narrow roads, we'd be having drunk kids wrapping cars around Mango Trees nightly 11 signals and a roundabout lol Is this the US?? uh OK ****************************************************************** save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha RE: Puna Driving Tips - Guest - 08-29-2014 When doing the Puna crawl right before high school, fake like your going up towards Keaau at the first light, but dont actually go, turn and just try to merge farther up near high school, so I can NOT let you in.. |
