Railroad/ Beach was always a poor choice. Now that they have invested money in them they may become a first choice.

Not having the access IS the trade off (in part). Seems like you rolled the dice and might have lost.

They are coming out on 19th. and I think 19th is a 70ft wide right of way. so if there is a lower puna left after this, it's going to be hard to argue not to use it.

Rob, can you remind us where the best choice route lay? Was it going through a different part of HPP using eminent domain? (I've forgotten the details.) I understand the issues with Beach Road.
I wish Shipman would stop putting a big "thou shalt not pass" block between the ocean and the highway.

Very nice and good idea Rob. Ever work for a planning department? You seem to have a knack for putting a proposal together nicely. Thanks for sharing. Too bad the Shipmans can't work on a proposal such as this, as you do propose a rock wall along their frontage.

There's an interesting, albeit extremely dry, book, I think it was called "The Shipmans of East Hawaii" which is well worth plowing through.. and it's a slog!
The takeaway from that book for me was that they are a very conservative organization, that has been playing their hand with the long term (hundreds of years) in mind, not so much the short. In other words they'll be way happy to have that road go through once it's in their financial interest to do so.
