The pyrethrins are a class of organic compounds normally derived from Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium that have potent insecticidal activity by targeting the nervous systems of insects. Pyrethrin is syntethically made by industrial methods, but it also naturally occurs in the Chrysanthemum flowers, and thus is often considered an organic insecticide

Alumside (near the mall) repairs screens. Not too expensive, looks mint. I did have one that had to be replaced... ~$40 I think.

For clarity, the chemical Permethrin is a pyrethroid compound, which are sythetic variants of the pyrethrin compounds naturally found in chrysanthemums. Pyrethoids tend to be longer lasting, but are more toxic to cats and aquatic life.

Bought some mosquito coils from Ace Hardware in Hilo this morning. There're still about half a dozen left on the shelf.
KTA store on Puainako (spelling?) has lots of OFF Deepwoods spray. They were just starting stocking up the shelf when I was there this morning, and there are at least four dozens more in unopened boxes on the top shelf.
Abundant Life store on the Hilo bayfront ran out of 100% citronella essential oil, but I found a small bottle one at Keaau Health Food store. They still have four more bottle left. I normally use the oil, just a few drops on my bare arms and legs will keep mosquitoes away for about half an hour.

Just read another governmental report from SE Asia, similar to our CDC, citing research in Pakistan with excellent results from papaya leaf.

Looked for mosquito preventing pellets or dunks for water/bromeliads at Home Depot in Hilo today, no luck- sold out and no one I spoke to knew when they would have more.
Longs in Pahoa had 40% DEET spray cans of insect repellent yesterday.

The timeing and claims after the Papaya "cure" is administered are very, hard to take.
My question is: Why are we just hearing about it ? One would think nearly ever concoction under the sun would have been tried for generations now. Lots of benefits but a "cure" ?

This is probably the article referenced: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3614241/#!po=60.7143 It is a single case study, but the papaya leaf, while rank, probably won't kill you. I have no basis to back up that opinion however....

refers to a few studies, one in FL and another in Sri Lanka which could be checked (my interest is waning this evening).

This report came out in 2011 and here are the statistics for an outbreak in 2013.If it works so great,why did these people die?
Why isn't there a followup report?
"An outbreak of dengue fever has been reported in Swat district of Khyber Pakthunkhwa (KPK) province in Pakistan. As of 25 September 2013, a total of 6376 suspected cases, including 23 deaths (case–fatality rate 0.36%), were reported from this district since 7 August 2013."
