I'm a big fan of vaccines, but a bigger fan of personal freedom.

What if a vaccine for HIV became available, but was statistically a success (protected 100,000 people per 1 maimed), how would you feel about being mandated to have that injection?

If I was against a government mandated requirement for the vaccine's use, I would hope the final decision rested in the hands of Gov. Ige or Mayor Kenoi. After an announcement of a Vaccine Investigative Committee, it's the last we'd ever hear of it.

...and then the regression back to the typical baffoonery.

as a retired healthcare professional, i find this very sad, very terrifying also. Not only for these bills, but for the way our government is taking more and more control of our lives. especially the HPV vaccine and all the problems the news has been reporting. but really, any time the government starts mandating healthcare amid all the other freedoms we have lost. so much science fiction coming to roost, it is indeed a brave new world..

It turns out that the HPV controversy was pretty much manufactured by the anti vaccers by not understanding that correlation is not causation. Someone dying a week after being vaccinated does not prove the vaccine was the cause. Investigation of the supposed incidences turned up other causes. I'm shocked that a health care worker would oppose vaccination.

EvilOctopus: Remember the Measles outbreak in CA last year?

Yes, I remember that it was somewhat of a witch hunt. If you're talking about the Disneyland thing, 157 people got the measles. The mortality rate of measles is vanishingly low. I think deaths on Highway 130 has it beat by a long shot. And that compares a 10 mile stretch of road that we all likely use at least weekly to a national fatality rate.

I got the measles as a kid, and so did everyone of my peer group as I remember it. Which in itself means nothing much. My music teacher in middle school had polio and walked with crutches. Which means nothing much.

Using the Disneyland measles outbreak to justify mandatory vaccinations of a generic nature to help folks with a compromised immune system?

This is pretty much what I mean about how convoluted the "discourse" is at present.

HotPE: We have to make out best assessment of the risk and benefit of vaccines, and act accordingly.

I couldn't agree more! But it seems like folks on either side have already decided, regardless of logic (and perhaps "making out" is not the best approach, though I am open to the idea Wink). I am simply saying it is hardly settled one way or the other, at least to my mind.

Feels like the silly dolphin birth thread. Feeling silly even posting. Oh well...but no one has bit on the typhoid teaser, so I have THAT going for me. Wink

Can you imagine the horror and outrage if people were actually forced to get their children educated? Government workers forcing information into empty little heads? Could a mistake occur? Could a child learn something that was not good?

God save us.

Yeah, measles schmeasles.

Measles affects about 20 million people a year,[1] primarily in the developing areas of Africa and Asia.[4] It causes the most vaccine-preventable deaths of any disease.[8] It resulted in about 96,000 deaths in 2013, down from 545,000 deaths in 1990.[9] In 1980, the disease is estimated to have caused 2.6 million deaths per year.[4]

Compulsory education is another issue I have never been able figure out. Lots of ins and outs and wherefores... Wink

Compulsory education is another issue I have never been able figure out.

The system was originally designed to train factory workers; note also how most schools resemble a prison or similar institution -- long true before the modern "security problems" of today.
