RE: Pending dog abuse laws - Kapoho Joe - 03-17-2017 24/7 tethering is bad enough but when you add LFA into the mix, it oughta be a felony. That's disappointing news especially for our four legged friends. RE: Pending dog abuse laws - TomK - 04-16-2017 Well, as I mentioned earlier, even if the bill had passed and became law, I don't think it would have made any difference here since dog laws are generally not enforced anyway. On the other hand, I would like to know why the bill failed as right now it seems legislators don't care about dog cruelty either. RE: Pending dog abuse laws - kalakoa - 04-17-2017 dog laws are generally not enforced anyway Most laws aren't enforced. Maybe start there. RE: Pending dog abuse laws - Eric1600 - 04-17-2017 I don't know if anyone remembers this, but I lobbied PunaWeb to get support for this last year. There were 3 bills which included a means of funding and enforcement: Senate Bills 2263, 2273 and 2270. None of them reached the table. If the people don't push, nothing will ever happen to change things. http://hawaiitribune-herald.com/news/local-news/trio-animal-cruelty-bills-fail-get-support quote: Current status on SB700 http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/measure_indiv.aspx?billtype=SB&billnumber=700&year=2017 Which is not as good as the previous 3 bills that went nowhere shows it is still in debate. But there's no funding really or enforcement provisions. They've also weakened the bill to just say shouldn't be constrained longer than specified by county ordinances [if the county even has any] 3/24/2017 H Passed Second Reading as amended in HD 1 and referred to the committee(s) on JUD with none voting aye with reservations; none voting no (0) and Representative(s) Aquino, DeCoite, Har, Ichiyama, C. Lee, Thielen excused (6). So well over half the entire populace of Hawai'i can't say **** about the local culture at any point. Another issue is that people don't care or feel entitled. "Tradition doesn't trump doing the right thing." tell that to the TMT protestors. Look how far they went out of their way to protest something that would only help them. I have no faith in anyone handling their dogs differently. Aloha RE: Pending dog abuse laws - Kapoho Joe - 04-17-2017 quote: We should not pass any more laws until we hire more police. One without the other is a waste of time. RE: Pending dog abuse laws - glassnumbers - 04-17-2017 First off, more cops is not better. Look at Ferguson and what happened there, more cops isn't the answer to any problem. If you want something to exist on the Big Island, you pretty much have three options from what I've read here and elsewhere. One you have the massive amount of capital to just buy whatever it is. Two, you research an area where the thing exists and you live there. Or three, you make the thing happen by yourself. You go off the grid, you hook up the solar cells, you drink the rainwater and clean out your catchment tank. Nobody posting on Punaweb is a millionaire, so we can't just buy the cops, or pressure them via donations and lobbyists. Apparently there doesn't exist an area naturally where the laws are enforced, so #2 is out as well. That leaves option #3, folks. If you feel badly about the dogs, you're going to have to free them yourself. Aloha RE: Pending dog abuse laws - kalakoa - 04-17-2017 We should not pass any more laws until we hire more police. More staff does not automatically create a higher rate of enforcement. Look no further than the existing situation. "Are they local? Well, then, you know... no harm done..." Might as well just offer a tax credit for use of the "Correct" dog leash. |
