The police selectively enforce the laws here in Puna, mainly because they are grossly understaffed. There are no more than 4 on duty police officers on the road at any given time in Puna. These are the types of growing pains you encounter when a predominately agricultural area turns into a bedroom community. RE: Watch Out - racing on Red Road.. - kalakoa - 07-24-2017 They are presently hoping for Labor Day... ...and all the illegal racing will magically stop just as soon as they finish "renovating", right? RE: Watch Out - racing on Red Road.. - Kapoho Joe - 07-24-2017 Nope. The track is crowded and costs too much. RE: Watch Out - racing on Red Road.. - alaskyn66 - 07-24-2017 They need one closer to Pahoa. RE: Watch Out - racing on Red Road.. - islandlvng - 07-24-2017 Races on "red road" have been ongoing for the 27 years I have been here. Long before the flood of people to puna. Yet we never hear of any damage or deaths. Long lines of sight, very little traffic/people. Much safer now that roads are nice. If police shut it down, they just go somewhere else that isn't as safe like up in volcano where most of the racing accidents occur, or down in keaukaha on kalanianaole. That's when people lose their life. Let em be. Street racing is in every state, in every town. Including puna. Just my humble opinion. RE: Watch Out - racing on Red Road.. - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 07-24-2017 Yet we never hear of any damage or deaths. There are two smashed up cars off the side of the road down there right now. The residents in the neighborhood said you better get off the road if two cars are racing & coming at you. They won't move out of your lane or slow down. Four people are in a room and seven leave. How many have to enter again before it's empty? RE: Watch Out - racing on Red Road.. - TomK - 07-24-2017 "There are no more than 4 on duty police officers on the road at any given time in Puna." Really? RE: Watch Out - racing on Red Road.. - Kapoho Joe - 07-24-2017 quote: Feel free to ask HPD. My data may be old. RE: Watch Out - racing on Red Road.. - TomK - 07-24-2017 I think it's much more than that but it's clear there are nowhere near enough police officers patrolling Puna. I'll try and find the info I had which did come from the Puna police (probably via our local neighborhood watch). Once I find it I'll post it. |
