Please help me to understand how the police do not respond with proactive enforcement. Seriously? It was even advertised on Craigslist. How hard would it be to simply drive you 45k taxpayer paid unmarked suv's down the road. It's called proactive patrol....most police routinely patrol in areas known to have a problem. I really don't want to bash the police, but sometimes I really understand why some in the population don't like, trust or respect law enforcement.

You sound like you either A) do not live here or B) just got here. The police selectively enforce the laws here in Puna, mainly because they are grossly understaffed. There are no more than 4 on duty police officers on the road at any given time in Puna. These are the types of growing pains you encounter when a predominately agricultural area turns into a bedroom community.

but they should have a dedicated strip to play on rather than a public road.

They do, sorta... Hilo Dragstrip...Track is County owned and has been "under renovation" since at least last December. Behind schedule, of course.. They are presently hoping for Labor Day...

Apparently, since it was the last post on page 1, most of you missed this.

They are presently hoping for Labor Day...

...and all the illegal racing will magically stop just as soon as they finish "renovating", right?

RE: Watch Out - racing on Red Road.. - Kapoho Joe - 07-24-2017

Nope. The track is crowded and costs too much.

They need one closer to Pahoa.

Races on "red road" have been ongoing for the 27 years I have been here. Long before the flood of people to puna. Yet we never hear of any damage or deaths. Long lines of sight, very little traffic/people. Much safer now that roads are nice. If police shut it down, they just go somewhere else that isn't as safe like up in volcano where most of the racing accidents occur, or down in keaukaha on kalanianaole. That's when people lose their life.

Let em be. Street racing is in every state, in every town. Including puna. Just my humble opinion.

Yet we never hear of any damage or deaths.

There are two smashed up cars off the side of the road down there right now.
The residents in the neighborhood said you better get off the road if two cars are racing & coming at you. They won't move out of your lane or slow down.

Four people are in a room and seven leave. How many have to enter again before it's empty?

"There are no more than 4 on duty police officers on the road at any given time in Puna."

Really?

Feel free to ask HPD. My data may be old.

I think it's much more than that but it's clear there are nowhere near enough police officers patrolling Puna. I'll try and find the info I had which did come from the Puna police (probably via our local neighborhood watch). Once I find it I'll post it.
