RE: Ratlung. Worse than we thought. - rainyjim - 01-15-2018 Hey Eric, UV light does kill things... https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-does-ultraviolet-ligh/ This article above explains it in detail. RE: Ratlung. Worse than we thought. - Kelena - 01-15-2018 Feeding someone produced fresh from a garden in Puna without telling them it is fresh from a garden in Puna is a form of reckless endangerment. I now personally know two people who have contracted this. Many local restaurants brag that their produce is fresh and local. A restaurant in town thought I was daft when I asked them what precautions they took against RLD in their fresh "garden" salad. The friend I was dining with was aghast that I would ask such a question: It's a fresh garden salad! Grown right here! Look! Little baby cobras on your plate! Grown right here! RE: Ratlung. Worse than we thought. - Eric1600 - 01-16-2018 rainyjim, did you see that I said: Prolonged and strong UV exposure might damage them enough to kill them... I didn't say UV won't kill things. However in the context of this discussion, the flow rates and low exposure in a household UV system doesn't kill much and definitely won't kill nametodes or RLW. If you read the first link I posted you'd see the large range of doses needed to sterilize pathogens (they say "destroy" but really it's sterilize 100% with a kill probability of 99%). RE: Ratlung. Worse than we thought. - MarkP - 01-16-2018 There are way more coqui frogs here than in Puerto Rico. There maybe way more semi-slugs here than in other parts of the world, hence the severity of symptoms. RE: Ratlung. Worse than we thought. - bananahead - 01-16-2018 over 90% of rats tested in Hilo have the worm.. its peaked how many have died in Hawaii from Rat Lung Worm again? ...besides that lady from Germany in a coma, fwiw... Lepto on average KILLS 1 person every 3 yrs here in Hawaii (33 deaths over last 100 yrs)... yet no one posts on it... the deadly one... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leptospirosis ****************************************************************** save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha RE: Ratlung. Worse than we thought. - rainyjim - 01-16-2018 quote: Hi Eric, I was referring to the above comment. RE: Ratlung. Worse than we thought. - rainyjim - 01-16-2018 UV light will definitely kill the parasites. What I think you are trying to point out (and I agree with) is that more study is needed to determine just what amount of exposure is necessary to kill the organisms. I would also posit that while this technique might be optimal for sterilizing water, it is not very helpful for many foods where the light would not be able to penetrate equally - like down into the folds between lettuce leaves for example. RE: Ratlung. Worse than we thought. - Eric1600 - 01-16-2018 Rainyjim, a typical house uses a 12 gpm, 41W rated at 30 mj/cm^2 or (0.03 ws/cm^2 or 30,000 uws/cm^2). Take 30,000 uws/cm^2 to match up with the tables and you'll see there's lots of things that don't reach 99% rates or even come close, especially the exposure time required for nametodes. What I'm trying to point out is that in terms of nametodes, of which rat lung worms are, they would fail to do anything to them unless for some reason they are especially vulnerable. In the test report I linked 24,000 uws / cm^2 took 9-12 minutes of exposure which no household equipment can do because that flow rate would be about 0.05 gpm (rough estimate) and it would be way too slow based on the common volume of household UV filters. bananahead, I know you're worried about leptospirosis. But we can do more than one research project at a time. The issue with RLW is no one knows how many people are infected, we only know about the severe cases which get sent to Oahu and have a spinal tap preformed. people have died and many people have had life crippling problems from RLW. There is no good preventative procedures, diagnosis methods or treatment methods, unlike for leptospirosis. Simple penicillin treats it typically and there are rarely deaths or any long term issues from it. RE: Ratlung. Worse than we thought. - rainyjim - 01-16-2018 I've never heard of nametodes. Maybe a spelling issue : ) RE: Ratlung. Worse than we thought. - Tink - 01-16-2018 I wonder if you "pre treatment" your cachment water by installing UV to the tank cover framework along with a final UV after your filtration to the house would work?
