We know that only Goddess Tutu Pele' knows .
Perhaps a new flow to Pahoa town or along the rift a new Pu'U to grace our landscape on her way to the big blue pond .
Perhaps between Mauna Ulu and Pu'U O'o .........
Only the Goddess Tutu Pele' knows .
Perhaps even a new flow from MaunaLoa to Discovery Harbour .
Only the Goddess Tutu Pele' knows.

Volcanoes rock!

I love the volcano threads here, i don't really have anything to contribute, it just makes me happy to read them.

Considering the continuing and rapidly increasing ground deformation at Puu Oo, as seen on HVO’s GPS - Puu Oo Cone graph, one has to wonder just how much longer we will wait for the onset of the next phase of surface activity out on the East Rift Zone.

For reference the HVO Deformation page is here:

https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/monitoring_deformation.html

and the specific plot I am referencing, besides being shown as the fifth plot on the page linked above, can be seen by itself (and larger) here:

https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/vsc/captures/kilauea/puuoo_crater_gps_year.png

Looking at that plot one notes that the distance being measured across Puu Oo has lengthened by almost 5 inches in the last 6 weeks. This is a phenomenal amount of extension. Greater than either of the two events of this nature we have had in the last five years. Far greater than the last event that recorded only 1/3 of what has now been recorded.

Most recently, in the last week, the data shows a rapid acceleration of extension. So much so that the current rate is well over a quarter of an inch a day. Considering that, and the amount of pressure it takes to do that, and that the backed up pressure has, at least in part, contributed to the remarkable increase in magma stored in the summit chamber (as seen with the current heightened state of the Halemaumau Lava Lake and its repeated overflows on to Halemaumau’s floor) one can imagine that the eruption that is most likely only a few days away, will be spectacular at its onset, when all that pent up magma is released.

RE: Pu'u O'o inflation - Mimosa - 04-28-2018

Yesterday our ohana rented a small 6 passenger high wing at old airport in hilo and flew at 3800 ft AGL to 5000 Ft AGL along the puna coastline ,at about Unko Roberts we headed up the pali to check out Pu'U O'o gaining altitude to be in compliance with FAA rules n regs ......... Pu'U O'o is definitely bulging upwards and outwards,we did 3 sharp banks and circled back down across lower Eden Roc to Hilo.
Tutu Pele is ready very soon to let loose another flow - somewhere along the rift - maybe towards pahoa once again.Time will tell. Fun flight, smooth till circling Pu'U O'o with updraft of heat turbulence . Elapsed time 1 hour 45 minutes .

Man, smelled smoke this morning and a huge whiff of sulphur just now, here in HA. Something is bubbling up somewhere on Kilauea!

Salutations and humble respect to Pele Ma and Happy Mother’s Day. It is an awesome and exciting experience to be a part of your ohana in the Ola’a Aina. We watch your activities in wonderment. It is a true blessing to live on the world’s most active volcano on the world’s most remote land mass among the Ohia and Koa, the native birds and forests, kissed by the never ending rain which washes the faces of the flowers, experiencing the snows of Mauna Kea, flanked by world’s largest volcano, able to witness the galaxies as they pass overhead, knowing that one day Loihi will become the newest Island. Here in Puna it is possible to forget all that is going on in outside world and just be (Summa Iru) here in blissful peace. Let the dancing begin.

RE: Pu'u O'o inflation - glinda - 04-30-2018

It is very possible a new eruption has begun out in the area of Puu Oo in the last hour or so.

The weather is keeping one from seeing very much through the webcams, or line of sight locations in Puna, but the instrumentation suggest the onset of substantial changes at about 2:10 local time.

The first sign of change is in the Electronic Tilt as seen on the first two plots here:

https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/monitoring_deformation.html

where you will see what looks like the instruments are recording a relatively flat line over the reporting period. This is unlike all the plots up until this time that showed vigorous changes both at the summit and down at Puu Oo. The reason for the change is the plots are now showing a very large change at the far right side where one can see the POC line (green) heading for the sky and then quickly turning around and falling again over the last hour and a half or so.

Note: the plots vertical reporting scale changes with the size of change being recorded. As such all of the last while changes have been deduced to that thin line because of the size of change happening now.

This, in most instances, would first be considered a machine malfunction more than an actual event and as such one would look to other independent data to rule out as much and considered it real. To look at other data, such as the the seismic stations in the area. I looked at the seismic data as it can be accessed here:

https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/hvo_earthquakes.html

To see the details, plots of actual recordings etc., you have to figure out how to use that page. There is a wealth of data there, being shown in real time, but one has to learn how to turn on access to the different sets. Using the "0 Instruments Visible..." drop down menu on the right, selecting what type of data you want to see and then click on the different instrument icons that show up on the map.

I turned on the Seismometers and then looked at the STCD station just to the west of the Puu Oo vent. This brings up a window with the actual recorded seismic trace plotted in several time spans. I then clicked on the 6 hours plot and was able to see this in a separate window.. as you can here:

https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/vsc/captures/kilauea/STCD-6h.png

in which you will note that by 14:10 (local time) there began a slow at first but marked increase in the tremor amplitude that over the next 45 minutes increased substantially. This change will not be seen in this, the 6 hour plot, as soon as that much time elapses.

To further confirm this is real, and not just malfunctions of instruments, I looked at the different seismic stations plots all the way back to the summit and they all show a similar pattern.

I believe this is a major increase in the tremor being recorded. Tremor is the seismic signature of magma moving in a conduit (under ground), and if there is enough of it is a strong indication of vigorous eruptive activity. This is most likely evidence of the onset of a new eruption out at Puu Oo. As such I suspect the ongoing overflows of the Halemaumau Vent to subside and all the extra magma that has been stored in Kilauea's summit to erupt down at the new vent, wherever it is, in the next few days. Hopefully it will clear up and the evening sky will be filled with that red glow that is so uniquely Puna.

Paul, if I am wrong I'll wear my Chicken Little wings.. I promise.

RE: Pu'u O'o inflation - LazyLehua - 04-30-2018

Glinda, something is definitely going on. There have been dozens of earthquakes every hour since this afternoon. We are up in Volcano and it ha definitely been an active day of ground tremors. The lava lake began to deflate two days ago and is currently below the new rim of the lava lake. Something is going on somewhere...we will just need to wait and see.

RE: Pu'u O'o inflation - Pilgrim - 04-30-2018

Spot on Glinda. Nice call on the HVO data. Lots of good shakers since this afternoon - now dozens per hour. It was never like this for either of the other two most recent events that resulted in new vents opening. Called a friend in Kalapana to see if he could see anything up the hill but he said it was dark with no glow anywhere along the pali between there and the park. Wow, I wonder what will happen.
