I just looked at the Counties HPD News Releases and didn't see anything listed.
I haven't seen any online accounts other then here on punaweb. I don't get the print version of the local papers.

People in Puna unfortunately drive like they never left their mainland homes. Drove all over and around two weeks ago, and people drive the same way on NS Oahu, Stupd! And of course they're all pros.
What's needed are unmarked, rotating ruthless CHP type traffic patrols, bonus to the highest ticket writer. With major increases in fines, and removing licenses and entire vehicles from some. Equip patrols with cameras to eliminate challenges. Driving is a privlage not a right, the bike crash looks like reckless excess, hope the brother makes it. The other driver needs some hard time!

This is exactly why there needs to be not only a light at that intersection, but also an officer on duty at that intersection to enforce it for several months.
I cannot say that I'm relieved to know that the guy on the bike survived. I don't know that it is a good thing to have to live your life horribly disfigured after such a traumatic encounter. And I feel a little selfish for being relieved that it isn't a person who it close to me.
All I can do is pray that the driver of the SUV no longer gets to have a license and that they will learn a valuable lesson in being considerate that their actions ultimately affect other people.
I HATE SUV's.... People who drive them should be required to have extra driver's training, as it seems that these are always the people that do the most damage when they are not paying attention, which is a lot of the time.

That's a really bad intersection. I have seen so many accidents and even more near misses over the years that I now completely avoid it. If I am leaving from Malama to go home to HPP I drive through the village and then turn left on 130 at the traffic light with the Pahoa-Kapoho road. It is worth the extra five minutes to have a safe leisurely left turn.
I have to say I don't understand the speed limits sometimes. The Keaau bypass section of 130, a four lane divided highway with wide shoulders through unbuilt land has a speed limit of 45, and then when you get past the humane society when it is down to 2 undivided lanes with with all these driveways and intersections it is 55. Weird.

I understand one of the designs of the new intersection will eliminate the current exit/ entrance at Malama on Hwy 130. Kahakai will be the four way intersection with a traffic signal. They will open the old Pahoa Road entrance (One Way) for vehicles heading south and need to go to Malama.
So you wondered why they built the quick-mart gas station on a dead end street. (Ha, Ha, Ha)[?][?]

There was another accident on the Pahoa bypass yesterday afternoon (Wednesday).
This one involved a couple of cars and a schoolbus. No students were injured when one of the cars ended up wedged under the rear of the bus. Time for action!
Regarding the earlier accident involving the SUV and motorcycle;
The bike victim, Peter Gonsalves, of Nanawale, was traveling towards Kalapana when an SUV heading the opposite way turned left into him. He is alive today because he had a helmet on, and because the Pahoa school nurse (Gerlinda Troy) was on the scene to immediatly apply a tournequet and give first aid.
I apologise for the misinformation in my earlier post concerning an illegal pass. The SUV was still at fault, but the wreck seems to be from carelessness rather than criminal insanity.
Peter is in Queens Hospital doing as well as expected under the circumstances. He will be fitted with a prostectic as they couldn't save his leg.

Does anyone think it would be inappropriate to start a new thread entitled "Get Well Peter" and then from there we just post get well wishes. Once we have compiled a bunch... I could print them out and bring them to the Hospital over here? (Rob... is that an acceptable terms of PW?)
The reason being for a new thread... Is that during his recovery, I don't think he needs to read the extra comments on "how, what or why" the important thing is that he is alive and that we support him during his recovery.
