Vacation rentals bring in a lot of taxes and other money.

Tourists leave on their own; bad long-term renters are impossible to evict. Unless you have a lawyer, a couple of years, and an extra $10K to fly deputies in from Maui.

Tourism is the main economic activity on this island.

They've tried -- and failed -- to pass "AirBnB regulations" on Oahu for three years. It's a classic "10% of this dollar or 100% of nothing", the tourists still spend plenty of money even if the State doesn't collect TAT from an "unlicensed" rental.

I have been planning on purchasing a place in Hawaiian Beaches (I like the area) that we could use for our vacation time (a couple months at a time) and have it available for vacation rentals when we aren't there. I can tell you now- if I had one right now at this moment- it would be open to anyone displaced from Leilani Estates. Rental income be damned. Gotta help the kama'aina.

Harry Kim agrees with me too.

Hopefully with the loss of so much housing/so many residents homeless, the legislature will finally pass that bill to crack down on all the illegal, parasitic vacation rentals in residential neighborhoods that are making the rental market so difficult on the island and that housing can go to renting to residents who lost their homes as opposed to tourists who won't be coming.

So easy to spot these FOB malihini types.

“Rental income be damned”. Your motives are sound, but wouldn’t it make more sense to rent it out to tourists and pass the rental income to those who need it, if you are so inclined?

rent it out to tourists and pass the rental income to those who need

Importing revenue is truly the "highest and best use".

RE: Tripadvisor at it again - HI_Someday - 05-16-2018

Anyone else get Harry Pritican's daily real estate emails? This was in today's email;

"Aloha Everyone, I posted a new video from my home/office dormer window this morning. I heard that Kohala vacation rental owners are posting fake news on Trip Advisor suggesting people cancel their Kona reservations and book in Kohala. Things are getting out of hand!!"

Hard to guess who he is refering too? I wonder - is there anything that can (legally) be done? It's amazing how prolific this person's BS is. I can't imagine the negative effect one person is having on so many. It's mind boggling.

RE: Tripadvisor at it again - PaulW - 05-16-2018

Hadn’t heard that but indeed it’s true. SheaG and KathyH are offering to help anyone with cancelling their bookings and recommend they rebook in South Kohala. I hope they get sued.

I got into it a bit with them today, but nothing to see folks, they deleted all my posts. Wink Funny thing, it was completely unintentional. I posted a link to a an air quality monitoring site and you'd think I had snatched the crown off their heads. Not much aloha there.

Truly some new inovative lurkers on here lately, i especially like md customs attitude,
A bit refreshing from some of the very strongly voiced discussions like before the eruption.
