RE: Duration of Kilauea event? Economic impacts? - geochem - 06-03-2018 quote: I wouldn't speak too soon on that conclusion - this eruption is not over yet.... RE: Duration of Kilauea event? Economic impacts? - ironyak - 06-03-2018 So whether or not this is a new eruption or not is an item of contention within USGS currently (6/3) - some say clearly yes it's a new eruption, others like Dr Jim K, saying it's all of a matter of semantics that really has nothing to do with the task of tracking this event. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZVgtBx4PX4 https://www.facebook.com/KWXXFM/videos/10156458856339413/ As for economic impacts, I haven't seen the Kona air quality problem mentioned here, but should be added to the tally. http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/38311484/cruise-line-bypasses-kona-again-amid-air-quality-concerns My guess is there are a lot more issues (the scanner some days is dominated by calls about breathing difficulties) but that these leads are being buried by the local media in order to limit the damage to the economy. RE: Duration of Kilauea event? RE: Duration of Kilauea event? Economic impacts? - kalakoa - 06-04-2018 Bill 108 regulating short-term rentals comes before the Planning Commission tomorrow (June 5) at 9:30am. Current "mandatory shutdown" may mean that no short-term rentals (outside of the V/CV/CG/CDH districts) can be grandfathered. Consider a future economy without the Volcano Park, AirB&B rentals, or cruise ships -- and possibly no TMT, if and when the State gets around to deciding. |
