I don't know how you folks can watch cable.. commercials every ten minutes.. I lose interest in a show and change the channel as soon as a commercial comes on.I guess. I'm better off without it.

Here's the current lineup of free channels we get with an external antenna pointed vaguely just west of Hilo from upper Orchidland:

9.1 KFVE local, http://www.k5thehometeam.com/
10.1 PBS major network
10.2 PBS different programming than 10.1
10.3 PBS Sometimes different programming than 10.1 or 10.2
11.1 FOX major network
11.2 CCW major network
13.1 NBC major network
13.2 CBS major network
14.1 KWHE religious programming and old TV shows/movies http://www.kwhe.com/
45.1 CBS (same programming as 13.2)
45.2 THIS TV movies and drama, http://honolulu.thistv.com/

Has to be 30 miles within range of broadcast antennas. But my fav app is Plutotv. No original programming but satisfy my priority. Never go past a paywall!!

I have not watched tv in 15+ years now (by choice), I remember to keep telling myself to move it up another 5 years, it amazes me how time flys. The reason is, it's too depressing, plus the commercials are way too many. I've got really depressed watching tv in my younger years, that all stopped after deciding not to watch it any more.

I do however have amazon prime, and I still download (torrent) series like west world and such. But without the commercials and trying to figure out a time to actually watch something (scedual wise). Kind of Ironic, I am in a building that pools a TV package (Spectrum) includes HBO/Stars etc...etc... I honestly don't know how many channels, but, I haven't even hooked the box up to the TV. The only shows I use to watch all the time was things like Nova and different stuff on PBS. But, that is available online as well from PBS itself. I guess I'm too spoiled and I only want to watch TV when I want to watch it (if at all). Local news??? Well, I may watch it if it was Big Island only, I'm surprised Maui doesn't have it's own local news by now.

I find that google news, and google home (AI assistant speaker) has all the news I want to hear from NPR, BBC, etc...etc... Without ads, I can also fire up google news on my phone if I'm feeling too out of the loop. So, I get all the news I need (probably too much) from online.

One day I may hook up the box, but, it's just another chatterbox with a boatload of nonstop commercials that is background negative programming for the subconscious --- that I am pretty happy not to be exposed to.

Maybe when I get too old and bedridden, I'll fire up the cable box! Something to look forward too! I can be one of those old cranky people that one can never be pleased.

RE: Alternatives to Spectrum TV? - Rob Tucker - 07-08-2018

I got one of those Roku Sticks and am impressed. It is a different environment than cable. On cable you go to their viewing guide and check to see what is on at 8 pm. On Roku there are about 500,000 things on all the time.

So I just called Spectrum and told them good bye.

Thank you Punawebbers for your advice....

Mahalo!

Rob,
I have one of the Roku boxes, and assuming the app selection is the same, here are a few of my favorites:

* News - CBSNews, they run a live feed, which is looped every half hour on slow news days, but the anchors get right to their desks for major late breaking stories, with in depth coverage
* Bloomberg News - free, live, business news
* PBS - most live programs are available for about two weeks on demand, so if you miss an episode of Nova or Masterpiece you have plenty of time to watch later. There’s also an extensive collection of older programs, and local programming from state PBS stations.
* Local News - if you want to check in on your old hometown, or places where family or friends live, there’s a substantial number of local stations offering their nightly news stories on demand. Get the latest on water main breaks in Sacramento, Cedar Rapids, Lexington...

"On Roku there are about 500,000 things on all the time."

There comes a point when channel surfing doesn't equal watching anything entertaining or useful. Half a million channels might look great but I challenge you to find something that isn't a load of crap.

RE: Alternatives to Spectrum TV? - PaulW - 07-09-2018

terracore, do you know if those channels will still be available when analog is switched off?
(forgive me, I don't know much about the tv system here)

RE: Alternatives to Spectrum TV? - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 07-09-2018

analog is switched off?

The channels terracore listed are all digital (hence 10.1, 10.2, etc), and are the new frequency for over the air broadcasts.
I believe all of the analog OTA channels were switched off some years ago.

RE: Alternatives to Spectrum TV? - PaulW - 07-09-2018

Thanks! For digital via antenna do you need some sort of translator (like a cable box) or can modern TVs handle that now?
