Red Cross donors believe they are supporting disaster relief when they send their money in. Running an undercover homeless shelter seems like a misuse of funds to me.
When disaster victims are victimized again by the thievery, drug abuse and mental health issues that the homeless bring with them, something is wrong.

How many people are there currently at the Pahoa shelter? How many of the total are homeless who are not evacuees?
Have you compiled a list of the crimes committed in emergency shelters, that itemizes whether they were by evacuees or homeless?

AaronM, have you actually visited the shelter to talk to some of the folks there and to actually see what's going on? World Central Kitchen has been cooking three meals a day for the shelters since May. Why don't you volunteer to serve food for a day and then you can offer a more informed opinion about the homeless/evacuees. We could sure use your help!

As someone who lost his home, I have been very active volunteering as a way to stay busy. I even labored on the cottages behind the Tin Shack. That land, BTW was already spoken for by Hope Services so nothing new there. I'm talking about opening their existing buildings, which would have been nice.
I was at the shelter for two nights and had to leave due to the influx of thieves, druggies and mental health victims, some of whom readily admitted to not being affected by the lava and just needing a place to stay.
I know first-hand of people living at the shelter who lost everything from wallets and electronics all the way up to a car! The Red Cross is a joke. The Hub has consistently put them to shame (and yes I have donated time and money there).
Basically this exercise has proven what I've always known. That the local community can do a much better job than the national corporate style charities do.
