RE: Make Puna's vote for Prez count!! Change system - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 04-04-2019 the only way to truly get to a popular vote would be to abolish all the states and start over with some other form of government. Puna is part of Hawaii and we vote for different levels of government, district, county, state. We don’t have to abolish the counties or the districts to vote for governor, senator, or representative. We don’t require a different form of government to vote at the state level. It’s the same at a national level. RE: Make Puna's vote for Prez count!! Change system - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 04-04-2019 If Brian Schatz et al don’t outright abolish the Electoral College, the Interstate Compact might transform it into the Electoral Popular Vote College. If enough states join and pledge their votes to the winner of the national election, not their state election, The Electoral College becomes inconsequential. The popular vote winner will always win the election. Hawaii is one of 14 states in the compact: New Mexico is the 14th state to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, bringing it to 189 electoral votes. The states will not shift their vote allocations until their combined electoral votes equal 270, enough to decide a presidential election. California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington state and the District of Columbia have also joined the compact. https://www.cnn.com/2019/04/04/politics/new-mexico-popular-vote/index.html RE: Make Puna's vote for Prez count!! EW your not ever going to get a better, real world explanation than this. its spot on. mahalo deserved RE: Make Puna's vote for Prez count!! Change system - Guest - 04-04-2019 one needs to ask ... where were all these anti-EC junkies before ? Oo RE: Make Puna's vote for Prez count!! Change system - ElysianWort - 04-05-2019 Okay so we have established that there actually are a mix of votes, democratic/rebulican, in Hawaii, California and New York? Saying it isn't mixed is a false statement. I guess I should have added the words, "I feel" or "I believe" in front of my previous statement: "Popular vote is the only fair way and takes some of the corruption out of our government." As I never claimed it to be factual. So I'm curious, with the way it's been for as long as I remember, where the prez has been decided and it all wraps up regardless of our puny electoral college impact way out here in Hawaii... I'm curious: Those of you happy with this system the way it is: Do you feel your vote for president counts way out here in Puna? RE: Make Puna's vote for Prez count!! Change system - leilanidude - 04-05-2019 "Popular vote is the only fair way and takes some of the corruption out of our government." ======================= Popular vote = majority rules. I do not think that is really what you want to see happen. Our founding fathers saw through that which is why we have the quite fair, Electoral College. RE: Make Puna's vote for Prez count!! Change system - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 04-05-2019 Our founding fathers saw through that which is why we have the quite fair, Electoral College. Which is why they set up a system designed to keep privileged, white males in power. It's worked hundreds of years, if you're a privileged white male. I'm not usually a fan of the Hawaiian Monarchy, but it was powerful white men who conducted the overthrow of a non-white woman. They just couldn't stand to have a woman in charge. It took another hundred years before non-white women in power became normalized. The Electoral College is the last bastion for white authority and entitlement. RE: Make Puna's vote for Prez count!! Seems to me the privileged white male design did not apply to the narrative in our last presidential election. As I recall the popular vote in Hawaii was for a privileged white male, Bernie, BUT...the electoral college threw their support behind a privileged white female, hillary, which flew in the face of the popular vote...now what momma? RE: Make Puna's vote for Prez count!! Change system - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 04-05-2019 ...now what momma? The Hawaii Primary held in March of 2016 was both a caucus and a Presidential Preference Poll. It was a vote for for the Democratic presidential primary candidates which included Sanders and Clinton. Sanders did in fact win the Hawaii primary. The Electoral College didn't play a roll in any of the state primaries, however, only in the national election which took place in November of 2016.
