RE: Face mask - VancouverIslander - 04-24-2020 Here's a good article on masks (oh, and hello everyone, I've been away from Punaweb for quite a while, but thought I'd drop in again!) https://www.livescience.com/are-face-masks-effective-reducing-coronavirus-spread.html Me ka ha`aha`a, Mike RE: Face mask - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 04-25-2020 200,000 masks delivered to Hilo yesterday: The Hawaii National Guard on Friday in Hilo dropped off a delivery of 200,000 surgical masks donated by Every1 Hawaii. “In less than 24 hours, we had 59 islandwide organizations make requests for masks,” Janice Ikeda, community leader at Vibrant Hawaii said. “There’s at least 50,000 individuals we know of that need masks today.” Vibrant Hawaii made it clear that organizations such as churches and shelters will be receiving only the amount of masks that can be used presently. “These masks are not meant to be stockpiled,” Ikeda said. “We want these out in the community in the next two weeks.” https://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/2020/04/25/hawaii-news/national-guard-delivers-200000-masks-to-hilo/ RE: Face mask - PaulW - 04-25-2020 Welcome back Vancouver. RE: Face mask - randomq - 04-25-2020 But wait, I thought surgical masks were also to be reserved for healthcare employees? Must not have got the memo. RE: Face mask - bodysurfer - 04-25-2020 I liked vancuvers post, would add to his link; ie; consider most “Mask Wear” is really just wearing a “personal anti-spray shield” which simply lowers the amount of spit and such you exhale to others. This includes bandannas, surgical masks, anything that years that allows you to breath in essentially unfiltered air, and then when you exhale will catch some/most of your spit. this includes “ M95”s that fit poorly, like over a beard and so leak air at the edges, but still catches most exhaled spit and other large drops, in theory, Thus the use is too protect others from you. Smokers and others w copd that have trouble exhaling often have trouble w any mask, cover or filter that inhibits exhaling. That means people that wear masks w exhale vents, like fancy m95s, in public, are exposing others to their spit that blows out the vent unobstructed. Masks that protect you, like a well fitted m95 filters the air you breath in, which is why its healpful for healthcare workers or others that have to get close and tend to share air/spit w others. Vented m95s are often preferred for use by folks w copd because there body inhales better than it exhales, but again they gives others no protection from them. Mask wear is really just about your good vs others good, which social contracts you buy into or observe fair winds, jlm |
