RE: The most Hawaii County thing ever - kalakoa - 01-02-2024 Some of them drive tow trucks. Tow trucks are driven by the uncles of DMV staff. RE: The most Hawaii County thing ever - terracore - 07-28-2026 Here's a new one. Got my vehicle registration renewal notice for my 2025 Rav4. Ah... the great thing about buying a new car is the safety is good for two years! NOPE! County says it's expired. NO ONLINE RENEWAL FOR YOU. CURRENTLY expired. Not "going to expire on the last day of September 2026" like somebody accidentally put it into the system with one year instead of two. They gave me zero years. Funny thing is the sticker on the car and the safety check certificate the dealer gave me clearly says September 2027. Why can't any bureaucrat do their $#@%* job right? How soon can we replace them with AI? RE: The most Hawaii County thing ever - HiloJulie - 07-29-2026 What does the CURRENT registration say your Safety Check expires?? RE: The most Hawaii County thing ever - Durian Fiend - 07-30-2026 That's annoying. Even though the "deal" hasn't changed and you have paperwork on your side, it looks like a trip to DMV will be necessary. You think a person made this error? Sounds more like an automated mistake to me.This is a reminder that my 2024 Crosstrek will be needing its first safety check this fall.
RE: The most Hawaii County thing ever - terracore - 08-24-2026 Maybe somebody can tell me what I'm supposed to do. I mailed in my check, the vehicle registration thing they sent me, "Submit a legible photocopy of the current Hawaii vehicle inspection certificate". And I did all those things. They sent me all of these back to me with a form that says, "We are unable to renew your registration at this time. The following checked items are required in order to renew your registration: Current Safety Check Inspection" AND THEY ATTACHED MY CURRENT SAFETY CHECK INSPECTION. THEY MAILED IT BACK TO ME. I have a current safety inspection sticker on my car. I have a current safety inspection certificate. I mailed them the legible photocopy as they requested. They mailed it back. I just want to GIVE THEM MY EFFING MONEY and renew the registration. I'm obviously missing something. "To avoid any late penalty fees please mail before or on 8/31/2026.... or you will be assessed a penalty fee of $16.00." What am I supposed to mail them? RE: The most Hawaii County thing ever - HiloJulie - 08-24-2026 I'm assuming your issue TC is on your new car and am basing what I am going to say on that assumption. I think the core issue you are experiencing is whomever did the original safety inspection. When a safety inspection is done that info is supposed to be electronically sent to the DMV along with the VIN and its pass/fail status and expire date. Something tells me that is where your issue lies. I asked this once before but never got an answer - your new car SHOULD have a 2-year safety inspection when originally titled and registered. What did your ORIGINAL first Certificate of Registration say that safety inspection expired??? I have shipped and titled and registered and had safety inspected about 9 or 10 cars in being here over 30 years and NEVER once had any issues - although each and every time I did it in person and became proactive, as in the first time being told I needed a weight ticket, after that on each car thereafter, I always got the weight ticket BEFORE the trek to the DMV. I also renew in person as well. But every renewal time I do the safety inspection in the morning and the DMV right after and at each time - the DMV already has the new Safety Inspection that was just done hour or two before logged in. And being clear, I think the longest I ever waited at either the old downtown office or the new Pahoa office was 15 minutes. RE: The most Hawaii County thing ever - kalianna - 08-24-2026 Donʻt mail them anything. Go to the DMV kiosk at KTA and try again or make an appt. at the DMV in Pahoa. If thereʻs a problem, they can tell you what it is and how to fix it. RE: The most Hawaii County thing ever - terracore - 08-27-2026 Well there's an hour and 15 minutes I'll never get back. I went to the Pahoa DMV. Waited in the BO line for 45 minutes. Handed the lady the letter I received with all the documents stapled to it. She punched a bunch of stuff into the computer, took out a tool to detach the check from the stapled bundle I was mailed, typed on the computer again, and handed me my vehicle registration. The whole thing took like 1 minute after I got my turn at the window. Wait. What? Why did this happen? Whoever processed (rejected) it the first time didn't want to type my license plate number into the appropriate field on the computer. Instead of taking 2 or 3 seconds to do that, they thought it was a better idea to generate a form letter with wrong information, get a supervisor to review / sign it, staple everything together, fold it up, stuff it in an envelope, go to the postage machine, and spend your tax dollars mailing everything back to me, so I could drive to Pahoa, wait in line for 45 minutes, waste a second or third county employee's time, and then drive home again. IT GETS BETTER. Because I was proactive and did the manual renewal in August instead of September when it was due, (though "To avoid any late penalty fees please mail before or on 8/31/2026.... or you will be assessed a penalty fee of $16.00...") they knocked a month off my registration and safety check so instead of it being due in 9/27, it's now due by the end 8/27. And what did they mean , "mail before 8/31/2026". I had already done that. Was I supposed to try mailing it a second time in hopes that somebody more competent was going to look at it? Obviously mailing it didn't work the first time. RE: The most Hawaii County thing ever - kalianna - 08-27-2026 Somebody just screwed up the first time. Next time go online and make an appt. with DMV. Quick in and out. You can make sure itʻs correct on site and donʻt have to deal with the mail. And wait until September to renew it again next year. RE: The most Hawaii County thing ever - randomq - 08-27-2026 Sometimes people show up to shitty, low paying, soul crushing government jobs hung over, stoned, sleep deprived, indifferent, or just plain dumb. Whatcha gonna do? None of this should involve a person anyway, or even an AI. Just a web app where you enter the relevant information and a credit card. And lord knows why they still weigh standard models of cars, or need to see a freaking piece of *paper* at all... |
